Editorial Reviews

It all started on March 8, 1964: the touring, the recording, the TV shows-life as we would know it for the next 39 years. We, The Statler Brothers, traveled to Canton, Ohio, and opened a Sunday afternoon show for Johnny Cash. Other people on the show that day were Bill Anderson, Sonny James, George Hamilton IV, June Carter and The Tennessee Three. After the show John met us downstairs in one of the dressing rooms of the Canton Memorial Auditorium and asked us if we wanted to finish the tour with him. Having nothing better to do for the rest of our lives we said yes, and on a handshake we left that night in the caravan, driving an already worn out 1957 Cadillac limousine, heading for Rockford, Illinois, and the next concert. After that it was Indianapolis, Indiana; Madison, Wisconsin; Green Bay; Duluth, Minnesota; Davenport, Iowa; and then back home to rest up a week or so and then back out to do it all over again. And it's been pretty much that way ever since. Twenty-six days after this first meeting, on April 3, 1964, we were in the Columbia recording studio in Nashville, cutting out first record, compliments of ol' John. The cycle had begun. Our pattern had been laid and the die had been cast and our lives would never be the same again. We were mercifully in show business and show business was unmercifully in us. God help us and bless us. And it all ended on October 26, 2002, at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia, just 85 miles from our hometown of Staunton. The four of us-Harold, Phil, Jimmy and Don-gathered for the last time in the aisle of our bus, fully dressed for the stage, and huddled, this time with our good and close friend Jimmy Dean, and had our regular pre-show prayer for the last time. The prayer was full of thankfulness and our hearts were full of gratefulness and the Civic Center was full of family and friends and fans who had made this moment possible for us. We walked off the bus for the last time, walked up the steps of the stage for the last time and faced the music for the last time. God help us and bless us again. It's all here for you to listen to and look at and relive with us: every moment, every emotion, every song. We thank all the people in our lives in the show and you'll hear who they are and what we said. But maybe the ones we overlooked and didn't thank were the ones we should take care of here and now. We'd like to thank each other-Harold and Phil and Jimmy and Don and what we have meant to each other professionally and personally: the hours and years we've spent together and the music and memories we've made together: the honesty of the sad times when we leaned on each other and the excitement of the good times we shared, what no one else ever saw. We've been through snow blizzards and hurricanes together. We've been through weddings and funerals together. We've traveled the globe together and had picnics in each other's backyards. That's friendship. And that's been our lives and our careers. That's been who we are and who we've become to one another. And we hope you've enjoyed it. We certainly have. God help us and bless us one more time, -Harold Reid, Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune and Don Reid Includes: Do You Remember These Do You Know You Are My Sunshine Susan When She Tried Too Much On My Heart Class of '57 Bed of Roses Oh Baby Mine Moments to Remember Memories Are Made Of This The Great Pretender Whatever Happened To Randolph Scott More Than a Name On a Will Flowers On the Wall Elizabeth I'll Go To My Grave Loving You Bus Fumes (Band Instrumental) A Place On Calvary How Great Thou Art This Old House Thank You World Amazing Grace

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sad Goodbye--A Tremendous Concert on DVD October 30, 2003
From the first time I heard the Statlers Brothers back in the late sixties early seventies they have and always will be my favorite group. This DVD is their final concert before going into what has to be considered an early retirement. Their remarkable 40 year career is capped off with perhaps their best performance ever. Harold and Phil were approaching their mid-sixties, Don 57, Jimmy a young 47-but it was as if they were still all in their twenties. They left their hearts and souls out on the stage that night, and everyone who was there at the concert and anyone who watches this DVD are left wanting more and believing they still have another 40 years to give. I said earlier they have always been my favorite "group", not "country group", because their music transcends the often muddy borders of the different musical genres, something clearly brought out in this concert. If you are at all a fan of the Statler Brothers, do not miss out on this one. Buy this DVD, there is no way you will be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent July 10, 2006
Verified Purchase
The DVD, which was recorded in Salem, Virginia, is the good-bye to touring performance by the legendary Statler Brothers. If you like the Statlers, this is a must buy. If you don't, consider the purchase, for it gives a very good introduction to the group, which is one of the most decorated in country music history, and may well be the best four part harmony group in recording history.

All-in-all, a great presentation from four great American entertainers.

Highest rating possible from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viva Statler Brothers April 19, 2005
We've been a Statler Brothers fan thru the days of the LPs, 45s, 8-Tracks, Cassettes, TV show on TNN, CDs and now the DVDs. We will always have their music and get a good feeling from it. The only "criticism" of the DVD is that it is MONO audio, not even stereo. We were all prepared for sitting back for 5-speaker "surround sound" but just got the output from the basic two speakers up front. Still a concert we'll play over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chalk one up for the Good Ole Boys! October 23, 2005
By Jeanne
It was their last performance together and it proved to be a night of great music and intense emotion as they put everything they had into each song. Longwinded so-so intro by Jimmy Dean but after that it was the guys' night in all their glory! They explained why they were retiring...had some laughs...and then later on did a heartfelt thank you to many they have known over the years. They also got personal talking about their kids then honored their wives with a special thank you, and we get to see them! They ended singing their favorite hymns. Powerful!! Don't miss it!! I highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Farewell for a Great Group November 19, 2007
By Scott
I became a Statler Brothers fan many years ago when a co-worker brought in an 8-track (yes, I said MANY years ago!) tape and I ended up listening to it over and over. Since then, I have purchased cassettes, then CDs, even re-mixed a few disks of my own, and so I was saddened to hear the group was retiring. Long story short, my respect for the quartet has only deepened since their departure and their music sounds even better today.

How wonderful that they allowed crew to film their final concert--and how wonderful a concert it was! I was not expecting to be so entertained. It isn't the most polished video tribute to come down the line, but it really fills the bill for fans who miss hearing the banter and the tight harmonies that marked this group. It contains a little of this and a little of that, but it's a good compilation of songs with almost every classic Statler Brothers hit included. The more you know the Statlers, the more you'll enjoy having this concert in your collection.

I've spent a lot on music over the years. This was money well spent.
