Style Name: 20" - Marathon Verified Purchase
I am a serious runner (1200 miles a year) and am always looking for products that will help me with my running. The stick marathon is definitely one of them. Before I address why this works for me, let me talk about selecting the right stick.

If you go to the product website (the stick dot com) you will see that there are many different kinds of sticks depending on your needs. There is even a stick selector into which you can enter your height, weight, age, areas you want to massage, and whether or not you prefer a deep or light massage. I strongly suggest going to that site before you purchase this product or a different stick. A number of the negative reviews complaining that the stick marathon is too soft or will not provide a deep massage simply ignore that different stick products work differently, and this is not one size fits all needs.

Here is why I like the stick marathon:

1. I am primarily interested in massaging my hamstrings and calves, and do NOT want a deep tissue massage. This is just the right length, easily fits in a suitcase or gym bag, and works well to loosen "knots" in those muscle groups.

2. Do NOT buy this if you want a deep tissue massage. It is not intended to do that, and has too much flex to let you apply the kind of pressure needed for a deep tissue massage. However, I find that a light massage is all that I need before and after my runs to reduce soreness.

3. Due to a bad cold, I had not been able to run for a couple of weeks, and when I went on my first 10 mile run I felt really sore in my hamstrings and calves. This product worked great to relieve the soreness, and enabled me to run an additional 35 miles over the next four days.

4.

I purchased "The Stick" (Travel Stick model) after previously purchasing the Marathon Stick model, which is slightly longer. I loved the Marathon Stick, and wanted a smaller model to fit in my gym bag for use right before and after workouts. Both of these massage sticks work great... easy to use do-it-yourself massage, can be used on almost any muscle group, and works well for loosening up tight muscles and tendons. My physical therapist recommended a massage stick for my tight calves, Achilles tendon, and IT band... really happy with both sticks! Before you buy, you might want to check out The Stick website to see all 15 or so Stick models so that you can choose the right one for your needs.

I have been learning submission grappling for a few years now. Having used extensively the Knob, the Tiger Tail, three foam rolls, tennis ball and the Stick, I feel that I can compare those products.

As everone reading this probably knows, those tools are used to soften up tight muscles, which can cause stiffness and pain in short term and injuries in long term. I found that the Stick works better for medium sized muscles. Specifically, the Stick was excellent for the back of my neck, my front shin (muscle outside of your shin bone), the forearms (both the back side and the front) and surprisingly, for the bottom of my feet. It was decent for my quads and my calfs but I preferred foam roll for those and other large muscles, including shoulders, glutes and IT band. The Knob worked better than either for small muscles, such as the part where the neck joins the shoulder, around the knee and front part of your body where your leg just joins your body. Tennis ball worked better for glutes, lower back and between the shoulders than any of those products.

So do I think the Stick is worth getting even if you have one or more of those above "massaging" products? Depending on your sport and pain area, absolutely! The areas where the Stick works well (forearms, neck, front shin, and foot) it works better than anything else I have ever tried. If your sport taxes those areas or if you feel pain or tightness there, the Stick will beat anything else.

How does the Stick compare to the cheaper Tiger Tail? I think it is a personal preference. For me, I like the cool and softer feel of the Stick. Tiger Tail is basically a bit stiffer (less bendy) and shorter. I didn't like its plastic foam wrap feel (it feels like cheap bicycle handles).

I normally don't write reviews, but am hoping this one can help someone. I got this product to work out cramping I have had on my calfs. I have had a pretty bad case of plantar fasciitis over the last 6 months as well. I had to actually use a cane to get around some. Embarassing for a 45 yeard old I would say. My leg cramps in the middle of the night were really bad. To make a long story short, I got this in the mail the other day, used it for about 15 minutes while watching tv. (made my 13 year old go get it from the UPS guy at the front door.) I was amazed. I just sat there and rolled it up and down on the painful areas. I got instant relief. I was able to put pressure on my heal without much pain right away. I have been doing it for the last server days and continue to find new knots that I am working out. I still have some tightness in my calfs but that is slowly going away. Too cool. The plantar fasciitis seems to be going away quickly too. I am blown away that it could be that simple. This product does seem to hold up well. Good luck.
