2.0 out of 5 stars What's this, Tom Wopat is a crooner, stay tuned
It came as a complete surprise to me to find that Tom was a singer. I bought this cd with a lot of reluctance. Well all that reluctance has been put to rest, Tom turns out to be a pretty good crooner. I am rather amazed at his style. He is a very relaxing singer.

There were two of his songs that I want to highlight on this review. The tunes are "Where Is Love"...

The first time I heard Tom Wopat introduced to perform a number my reaction was, "Oh, no, not another actor who thinks he can sing". Was I ever wrong! Tom Wopat is a singer of the highest quality. His rich, sensuous voice mesmerizes you with every note he sings. Whether it's popular standards, country or jazz, you are captivated totally and he always leaves you wanting more.

I awaited the release of "The Still of The Night" with enthusiastic anticipation and could not have been more pleased. The vocals are soulful and passionate. You feel like you are alone in a room with Tom Wopat and he is singing directly to you. "Let's Fall in Love" is an invitation you can't resist. The playful duet between Tom and Antonia Bennett on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is joyous. His emotion filled rendition of "Anyone Can Whistle" and personal nuances in "Makin' Whoopee" leave you breathless.

Tom Wopat is a performer whose love of his art emanates with each note he sings. This CD is a must for any serious music lover or any romantic at heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Still of the Night, November 20, 2000

Besides always being a huge fan of Dukes of Hazzard, I'm equally a fan of Tom Wopat and have followed his career since his TV days. This is by far the best album I have in my collection. I must say, however, that I was never a big fan of Jazz and Frank Sinatra type music. . . Now, thanks to this album, I am. The music supporting his spectacular voice is "rich" and this CD makes you feel that the artist is right there giving you a private concert. Even my 3-year old son requests to hear the "Luke" CD. 3 Cheers to Tom and all the rest for a fantastic collection of romantic songs. I recommend this CD highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true Broadway treasure, February 23, 2004
This review is from: Still of the Night (Audio CD)
I was always hesitant about buying this cd when I'd stumble on it here on Amazon. That all changed when I saw him perform as Billy Flynn in the touring cast of Chicago. Tom Wopat has an amazing singing voice! Granted, he does not have a typical Broadway singing voice, what he does have is a lot of passion and strength. I'm recommending this cd to everyone I know. I was so impressed with him that I bought his cd at intermission. And being the great guy he is, he even autographed my cd in the lobby after the show. A must own cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE STILL OF THE NIGHT; A Nice Surprise, September 2, 2003
By
M.L. Allen "Allen's Opinion" (Daytona Beach, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Still of the Night (Audio CD)

Tom Wopat's THE STILL OF THE NIGHT starts with an easy swinging "Let's Fall in Love" and that's the second surprise on this album. The first is that it is classified as country. Wopat's voice is rich, romantic, and meltingly sweet, with a hint of Steve Tyrell's growl--a nice voice for a jazz singer.

Granted, at times, listening to this album is a little like reading a letter home from a beloved cousin. He's been away a long time. He's homesick. You cherish every word. He sends a "hello" to his country cousins with "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" and "If These Walls Could Talk"--and a very nice "hello" it is. He gets playful with Gus Kahn`s "Makin' Whoopie;" although he presents a decidedly more sophisticated version than Eddie Cantor's.

In other places he really gets up close and personal. You care about this guy. His searching "Where Is Love" and his wistful "Anyone Can Whistle" touch your heart. He might be singing "Where or When" in your ear. His heartache on Hoagy Carmichael's haunting "I Get Along Without You Very Well" makes you miss him--or maybe just miss somebody.

The arrangements and orchestrations are excellent, unobtrusive, and suit the easy, mellow tone of this album very well. The piano that follows Wopat throughout obviously loves him. (For examples of this remarkable relationship, hear the samples on Amazon.com." ) Wopat's voice is warm and intimate. Nobody ever before made me want to listen to "Ruby."

This album is a nice surprise. Wopat has a tender, appealing way about him. One hopes he keeps surprising us, maybe with an album of standards. We could use another good singer saving our heritage of lyrics and melodies we can understand. And Tom Wopat is definitely a good singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great recording., March 3, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

In these times, when loud screeching and atonal bombast pass for music, lyrics about human depravity are applauded for plumbing the depths of profundity, and a great number of the top 100 are most suitable for accompanying root canals, we have a retro-album from Tom Wopat to soothe the soul and elevate the human spirit.

When I bought this disc, I was expecting a Broadway-style production ---- full of razzle-dazzle and sock-it-to-'em bravura. I was more than delighted to encounter a series of songs presented in such a tasteful and understated manner, that, to my surprise, I have kept replaying them more often than I ever anticipated.

This is a very classy and exceptional offering. I hope Tom Wopat will put out a lot more material with the same approach.

It is so Romantic, playful and wistful. His voice conveys that degree of sensitivity so irresistible in a strong man.I knew he could carry a tune from "Dukes", but who knew he could carry it so far? Certainly not I.

I don't understand how this CD could possibly be considered country? It truly is an amazing CD; so very expressive and heartfelt. I LOVED it!

A MUST HAVE for anyone with GOOD TASTE! A well cherished CD. I need more, please don't stop. 2,3 CD'S more would be grand...

5.0 out of 5 stars Something you'll listen to for a long time...., October 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Still of the Night (Audio CD)
I had read a lot of good things about this CD before it was released, so my curiousity was piqued. Surprisingly, this is one of those discs that live up to the hype. Forget "The Dukes of Hazzard," Wopat is truly a solid singer, with a warm, lived-in voice that is straightforward and appealing. He uses it here on a selection of songs that are both classic and contemporary, but they all mesh together well, with an understated, jazz-flavored backing. It's the type of disc that plays especially well with candlelight and an intimate dinner. The best tracks include Wopat's haunting version of Jimmy Webb's "If These Walls Could Speak" and "Baby, It's Cold Outside," quite playful in a duet with Antonia Bennett. This is a rich, rewarding collection, a must for any fan of cabaret-style performers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, January 15, 2009
This review is from: Still of the Night (Audio CD)
Can't recall why I picked this up in the first place. Maybe it was the song selection? To me, it was a combination of clever, complex and passionate titles. I was familiar with who Tom was, but had never seen his TV show or had the pleasure of seeing him on Broadway.

I have since picked up at least 3 copies of this CD and will probably pick up more. I'll find myself going on and on about how entertaining it was and then just give my copy away only to have to get another copy. And all along the way, making converts and fans. What a delightful surprise.

If you appreciate an artist who truly knows his way with a lyric, you'll love this project.

A very ,very nicely done performance by Mr. Wopat.
After one listen- it has not left the player.

His renditions of
Anyone Can Whistle / Lets Fall in Love / Baby It's Cold Outside are the best that I have heard.

This is a well-assembled, polished recording. The different song selections featuring many different musicians gives the listener a unique experience as if they are hearing these songs for the first time.

This recording just took me by surprize. A nice gift to oneself or their best friend.

Enjoy
