I really really like the premise of this book. It is a nice thick book with a wide variety of recipes utilizing a limited set of pantry ingredients. In the back are tear-out grocery lists wherein you can check off the basic pantry items you need to replenish.

This would have been ideal for me say 5 years ago, when I still cooked with a lot of cans, mixes, sauces and partially prepared items. This book is not for those who want everything from a box and just put it together, but it also has a lack of recipes where all the items come in their completely natural state, say dried beans instead of canned beans, or garden fresh tomatoes instead of cans, makes bread from scratch rather than canned or frozen dough, etc. Because of that I would say this is for the "in between" cook, the one who does actually turn on the stove and cook every night, but not the one who uses ingredients from bulk bins or the back yard garden, or makes bread completely from scratch. If that person is you, this book will likely be loved.

If you tend more to the completely from scratch cooking, this cookbook will be less desirable unless you are willing to adapt it, but then you need to change the recipes a tad, and the handy grocery lists in the back are not as useful. Hence I gave this book 4 stars, because it is nicely written, pretty and organized, but not for my cooking style personally.

This is a different kind of cookbook that not only has lots of recipes for appetizers, breakfast and brunch, salads and side dishes, main dishes, and desserts, but also includes a master grocery list of every ingredient needed. In other words, if you buy everything on the list, you now have what you need to make any recipe in the entire book. No second guessing. No standing in front of the pantry wondering what to make for dinner and whether you have what you need. No unnecessary trips to the grocery store for the one thing you don't have to complete a recipe. And no more bottles of unusual spices or special sauces that got used once for one recipe and now sit past their "use by" date in the back of the pantry or fridge.

It's one thing to have a lot of food ingredients on hand and another to actually have a plan to use them without waste. The Stocked Kitchen solves that by streamlining ingredients so that a food item or seasoning is used in several different recipes. Something like balsamic vinegar, instead of being used once for a salad dressing, shows up in 12 recipes; garlic powder is used in 37 recipes, calamata olives in nine, pine nuts in 13, puff pastry is used in 11 recipes, etc., while still offering plenty of variety. This is a great plan for busy moms because the list is already made out and once the items are in the pantry, fridge, and freezer, anything from the cookbook can be prepared.

I've made several recipes with good results, including Baked Penne, Nutty Chicken, and Feta Chicken With Spinach. There are several other recipes I'm looking forward to trying. Some color photographs are included to showcase several of the dishes.

LOVE this book - great concept, great recipes. I had most of the ingredients in my kitchen anyway so I tried some of the recipes online before buying the book.. Bought the book after making 3 delicious meals and the peanutbutter brownies. I've probably made a dozen recipes so far and love them all. My family comes back for seconds. The recipes are delicious but not difficult to make. It is saving me a lot of time and heartache wondering what to make for dinner. I do all my shopping on the weekends and haven't been to the grocery store once during the week since I started this plan. Can't say enough about it. Highly recommend!!

I have a variety of cookbooks, from grandma recipes to blue ribbon cook-off recipes to slow cookers and so on. Had a general idea of what I would be receiving when I ordered the book. It sounded like a cool idea so I did. However, this would depend on you personally. Not really my cup of tea though. Not sure if I am going to keep it, or put it aside and give it as a gift to somebody. I am going to go neutral on judging it. I'm not calling it a bad book, it does have goods in there. The shopping list has about 150 items on it. Don't panic, I'm sure you have these items right now. I'm a very picky eater and I was only missing about a dozen, due to the fact that I don't like them. Another dozen I was missing was due to freshness, like produce. There was a handful of recipes in there that did catch my attention, but way too many I wouldn't use, because of the items I don't like.

If you are just starting and have no idea what are good basic staples for a pantry.
The items on the pantry list are pretty typical and basic.
You are able to open you cabinet and fridge make a meal, maybe missing produce, which you can pick up on way home from work.
Recipes are easy to follow and understand.
Nice pics on the few recipes they show.
Fairly quick time on dish.

Just my opinion, too many recipes I wouldn't use.
Limited on the variety of fruits and veggies.
A lot of pre made foods, like canned beans, canned veggies and frozen dough can be handled a different way.

It's not hard to soak beans for hours and cook, cool then freeze in serving size. Frozen veggies are healthier than canned and usually thaw while cooking the dish. Fresh mushrooms will cook with meal and you can purchase those whole or sliced.
