Editorial Reviews

Mr. Big are back with their second studio album since the reunion of the original line up in 2009, the follow up to 2011's successful, WHAT IF... album. ...THE STORIES WE COULD TELL was recorded under the direction of Pat Regan (Deep Purple, KISS, Warrant, Keel).

Customer Reviews

Eric martin sounds great as always with the rest of the cast serving up their usual best.

Mr. Big always got lumped in with other "hair" bands from the late 80's and early 90's, but the fact is that they never really fit that description. Sure, they are capable and have at times played that style, but for the most part, their sound has always been influenced by classic rock. It's a heavy, driving, mid-tempo sound with the occasional scorcher and the occasional ballad mixed in.

This album is a proper follow up to 2011's excellent comeback album, "What If.." Obviously some reviewers on here disagree, but this may, after repeated listens, be just as good as anything the band has done. They don't break any new ground, but this effort will certainly please their fans and anyone else who likes this style of rock. The band is in fine form as always, and about half the songs take hold with killer hooks. Similar to their last album, there are no bad songs on the record whatsoever; even the less spectacular moments are tolerable. "What If.." was a lot to live up to, but the band proved that they still have a lot of stories to tell, and anyone who listens certainly won't regret it.

I have decided to write this review in response to two critical reviews posted here. Jvv86 "Just Okay" and JPF "Disappointed. I have absolutely no idea what CD these two reviewers listened to but I can assure you it wasn't the same Mr. Big CD I listened to. To begin with I'm a 56 year old rock and roll fan from wayyy back. I have over 2000 albums and about 5000 CDs in my rock and roll library. This last Mr. Big CD is an excellent example of hard rock with a blues edge, swagger that has meaning and solid rock musicianship replete with taste and intensity. Do yourself a big favor and give this CD a listen. you will not be disappointed and you will be exposed to some of the best hard rock music this year.

GREAT CD!!! Disappointed???? SERIOUSLY????? This is Mr. Big right out of the past, as they always have been. Eric sounds as good as always, Paul's riffs are killer, Billy plays his ass off, Pat is.... well... IS PAT!!! All good tunes, my faves are probably "The Monster In Me", "The Stories We Could Tell" and "It's Always About That Girl".

Sorry to disappoint you (critics) , but this album is pretty pretty goooood. Groove , up-tempo tracks , soul , blues. They gotta do more of this . Feels like the following album of Hey Man . What if , was a great album too , but was an attempt to recruit new listeners , more metal and melodic oriented (something very common these days ). If you grew up with this guys , this is more like the line of the first albums, musically. I am pleased to listen some groove and that slow tempo on ¨¨Its always about that girl¨ . If you believe What if , was their best , this one might not work for you perhaps , at least that is my perception. Everyone is great here , particularly Eric , sounds great here !

Mr Big have released another great album full of bluesy grooves and tasty melodies with the original line up of Eric Martin on vocals, Paul Gilbert on guitars, Billy Sheehan on bass, and Pat Torpey on drums. Produced, engineered and orchestrated by Pat Regan, for the first time the band decided to record their parts separately due to time and location constraints in addition to health issues for drummer Pat Torpey but the overall sound and production qualities are still very good. The interviews in the bonus DVD that come in this special edition explain that Pat Torpey lost so much strength to play drums due to Parkinson's Disease that it all had to be programmed by him with an assistant which is amazing considering how good the final effect is. Eric Martin was also a key player in regards to the production and arrangement of the entire project this time instead of only focusing on vocals. Highlights include the rocking opening track "Gotta Love The Ride" which features a memorable vocal hook and a superb guitar solo, the killer bluesy riffs of "I Forget To Breathe", the awesome chorus and memorable melody of "Fragile", the big chorus of acoustic ballad "East/West" that reflects on love in that distinct Mr Big style, the epic and hook filled sentimental ballad "Just Let Your Heart Decide", and the blistering rocker "Cinderella Smile". The Japanese deluxe edition includes the bonus live track of "30 Days In The Hole" and a second disc of ten re-recorded Mr Big hits plus a third disc of 30 minutes worth of interesting DVD interviews as I mentioned earlier. Despite the fact that Stories We Could Tell doesn't quite reach the amazing song writing quality contained on What If, it is really a great package for fans of Mr Big and boldly continues the legacy of one of the most musically gifted bands of all time.

These guys are fighters and passionate musicians. They've survived everything in their wonderful careers and now they have the guts to record a blues-rock album in 2014, that reminds us of Bad Company and the good-old 70s blues-rock bands. The biggest gem for me is the song FRAGILE, this is Mr. Big at its best, wonderful melodies in a fantastic up-beat song. East / West is another favorite, it has some of the coolest harmony vocals on the record, with SUCH an incredible vocal Melody Eric That Delivers with pure Feeling. You can Hear Paul building up from His Solo record in search for the Blues in this album ... very Nice and fat Guitar Sound, with lots of blues. This album requires repeated listens, songs like "Gotta love the ride" grow on you like fungus! Man I can not get that song out of my head now ... I hope fans and the worldwide audience give this record the chance it deserves . To me, the guys have rise to the occasion to give us something different in their fantastic catalogue, I personally did not want to hear another Lean Into It, it's a new era for Mr. Big and I love it.
