Narrating through the voice of Doopers Lanza, author Garasamo Maccagnone presents a moving coming of age tale in, The Storm that Chased Me.

Life for Doopers has been tragically stunted. Suspended in a limbo of ill health and deteriorating emotional stability, Doopers agonizes over the tiniest muscle twinge or belch as potential signs of reoccurring colitis. Nothing in his routine ever changes and he lives in lonely isolation dreaming of his long-distance girlfriend, the virtuous and beautiful Maricela. He hangs, development suspended, a boy man hiding from the world. All that is about to change as a chance dispute with his mother triggers a call which changes his life forever.

Doopers' is shocked into wakefulness when a large RV bus arrives with his estranged father at the wheel. Living in California after their divorce, the now famous cartoonist has come to take Doopers out of his mother's begrudging care. The road before them brings father and son together as Tommy Lanza teaches his son how to live past disease, and about the true spirit of charity and compassion. Suddenly, his dreams of reunion with Maricela become a possibility as they turn the RV toward the southern border, where Doopers intends to claim Maricela's hand. The horizon darkens menacingly the further south they travel and Doopers begins to worry about the dangerous secret he keeps for Maricela. Time is running out in the game Maricela is playing, a game she can't hope to win. The closer Doopers gets to her, the more menacing the storms around her become and the louder the thunder rolls.

From Michigan's Great Lakes to a desert border between the US and Mexico, Doopers' journey carries him across the country and into adulthood.

Format: Paperback
From the opening scene, where the stricken Dante "Doopers" Lanza stares at the steeple of the Lutheran Church from his window, Garasamo Maccagnone begins to paint a narrative on the Catholic vision of love, faith, and sacrifice. As Doopers yearns for his girlfriend Maricela, the devout virgin who shepherds victims of human trafficking on the Mexican/Texas border, he is caught in a lifestyle that only allows him to dream of the girl he loves. Doopers is frozen in his fear from his disease. It isn't until his eccentric father, the infamous cartoonist, Tommy Lanza, shows up in a souped-up RV, that Doopers can even consider leaving the house. When he does, to the delight of his man-hating mother, Doopers learns the valuable lessons he needs to know in order to live through the daily struggles of colitis.
In that same odyssey, Doopers develops a special bond with the comedic Joel, Tommy Lanza's California sidekick, who, like the father, teaches Dooper's lessons with unorthodox methods. All in all, the story is guided through the fun-loving play of the three, until its decided that the three will head south for the border to meet Maricela, the girl that Doopers wants to propose to. As the RV moves south, the storms follow, and it's not until the end, the very end, that its obvious that such storms are just too perilous for all of them to survive.
This is a serious book that made me laugh many times, but made me cry as well. Like Doopers, I was awakened by the storms and now, in the aftermath of reading, I long for a calm and peaceful morning, one in which I can contemplate all that I just learned.

To be honest, I have yet to read THE STORM THAT CHASED ME, but I can state with all truthfulness that I have read much of what Mr. Maccagnone has written and have yet to be disappointed. He artistically weaves words with sensitivity and rare ability. There have been occasions when I not only couldn't put the book down, but was unable read fast enough to find out what happens next. I can't wait to experience his latest effort.
