More About the Author

Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born on June 26, 1892, in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Her parents were Southern Presbyterian missionaries, most often stationed in China, and from childhood, Pearl spoke both English and Chinese. She returned to China shortly after graduation from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1914, and the following year, she met a young agricultural economist named John Lossing Buck. They married in 1917, and immediately moved to Nanhsuchou in rural Anhwei province. In this impoverished community, Pearl Buck gathered the material that she would later use in The Good Earth and other stories of China.
Pearl began to publish stories and essays in the 1920s, in magazines such as The Nation, The Chinese Recorder, Asia, and The Atlantic Monthly. Her first novel, East Wind, West Wind, was published by the John Day Company in 1930. John Day's publisher, Richard Walsh, would eventually become Pearl's second husband, in 1935, after both received divorces.

In 1931, John Day published Pearl's second novel, The Good Earth. This became the bestselling book of both 1931 and 1932, won the Pulitzer Prize and the Howells Medal in 1935, and would be adapted as a major MGM film in 1937. Other novels and books of nonfiction quickly followed. In 1938, less than a decade after her first book had appeared, Pearl won the Nobel Prize in literature, the first American woman to do so. By the time of her death in 1973, Pearl had published more than seventy books: novels, collections of stories, biography and autobiography, poetry, drama, children's literature, and translations from the Chinese. She is buried at Green Hills Farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

For someone who has tried to read the Bible several times but been unsuccessful at keeping it up due to the conplexity of the language used, this book was golden. In it, Pearl S Buck retells the bible stories in an interesting and informative way. I have read the book through over several days and could not wait until evening when I would have time to get back to the stories. I was also able to retain the stories and their meanings. It would be a great for primer for pre-teen kids and, of course, adults.

Pearl Buck's Story Bible is in the same league with Jesse Lyman Hurlbut's and Elsie Egermeier's books (Bible stories rewritten with children in mind.) Of the three, Buck's was written most recently. Buck's rendition of the Bible stories is intelligent, detailed, and reverent. One father of four told me this was the best book he's ever read!

Parents should purchase at least one Bible story book for their family library, and this is an excellent choice.

This is the only Bible story book I will use for my grandkids.
Buck knows the scriptures and respects them. She writes very well. She sticks very close to what is written in the Bible without alot of conjecture to enhance the story. That makes it valuable to me.

Someone started reading this wonderful book to my 90 year old mama and she wanted her own when they were finished. However it is out of print. I was able to secure a brand new one on this site. It is all the stories many of us know from the Bible in "plain" English. A nice addition to any library and might be a lot of comfort to any oldsters a person might visit.

As a Pearl S. Buck fan since my youth I was very interested in seeing what she had written about the Bible. I was pleasantly surprised by the book and have recommended it to a friend I share scripture readings with. I do recommend this to others who enjoy reading scripture.

My daughter liked this version a lot. I found it a little too shortened and have been using other resources and reading directly from the bible to her. It was affordable and would definitely make for a quick read, so I am happy with the purchase. Overall I'd say the style of writing is pleasant and great for kids.

I love reading it! Never have I been able to find reading the stories of the Bible more enjoyable or clear. The stories are told in the order that they happen and in clear language that flows well! A good book for anyone who has ever felt daunted by the task of reading the Bible! This will give you the base to then go to the Bible with a better understanding of what is happening, when it is happening, and why! I am so thankful that Pearl Buck took the time to write it!!
