Review

"The Nativity story from the King James Bible serves as the text for this engaging interpretation done in exquisite cut-paper-and-watercolor illustrations that stand out against dramatic, black backgrounds." - Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Pamela Dalton's cut-paper artwork has delighted collectors worldwide for almost twenty-five years. Her work is created in the tradition of early American paper cutting popular in the Pennsylvania German regions of this country in the early nineteenth century. Her original designs are influenced by popular historical themes: patriotism, biblical and religious motifs, and scenes from rural life. Each piece is sketched freehand by the artist and then cut by hand, so no two are exactly alike.

All her books are destined to be special family books to be read over and over.

The beautiful illustrations and placement of the verses in small bits make the story much more accessible to children who are beginning to read.

What a wondrous beauty-- "The Story of Christmas," the book illustrated by Pamela Dalton. This beautifully illustrated book of the Christmas story taken directly from the four Gospels of the King James Bible belongs in every Christian's home. While the book was probably initially written for children there is absolutely no reason why all ages would not enjoy the book equally. Because it is written in the timeless language of the King James Bible it has a poetic lilt to the text and will appeal to many different age groups.

The 10 3/8 inch by 10 3/8 inch book is richly illustrated by intricate scissor-cut illustrations in the style of Scherenschnitte. Scherenschnitte is an art form rooted in Pennsylvania German folk art. The scissor-cut illustrations also take on a medieval and Renaissance Italian art form look. Each page contains these beautiful full colored cut out art pieces. An interesting feature of the book is that each page has a black background which makes the colorful cut pieces of artwork to stand out even more profoundly. The text is also interesting; it is white, but contrasts beautifully with the black background. Another unique feature of the book is that both the front and back endpapers are beautifully illustrated by cut out flowers on a black background which reminds you of wallpaper. Several of the beginning pages are illuminated in the medieval style of page illumination.

For the religious purist as well as the secular reader, this book is to be enjoyed and cherished through a lifetime. Reading this book and sharing the beautiful scissor cut-out artwork with your family would be a wonderful way to remember the first and true account of "The Story of Christmas" on Christmas Day or Eve. The book would make a wonderful gift for anyone.

I love the illustrations in this book, but gave it three stars because I can't get over the fact that Mary has pure white hair, all the people look like they're Scandinavian or German, and Joseph, who I know was older than Mary, certainly wasn't about 75 as he appears in this book. I'm just not sure what the illustrator was thinking. Otherwise a beautiful book.

I really liked the idea of having a book that used the real words of the Bible. I saw this one and thought it looked really pretty and would be perfect. BUT when I received it I was disappointed with the illustrations. Online it is hard to see the details, it just looks very pretty. But when you see it in real life, it isn't all that nice. The contrast with the black background is great, but the faces/people are rather awkward.

We decided to return it and luckily we found a similar book with MUCH nicer illustrations. "The Nativity" by Ruth Sanderson uses the same translation and from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The illustrations in that book are very elegant and traditional. I recommend buying "The Nativity" instead, it costs slightly less, you can find it on amazon, and I think the illustrations are better. Hope that helps.

Told through the eyes and hands of the talented illustrator Pamela Dalton, the story of the birth of Jesus Christ comes to life in the pages of this gorgeous picture book.

Pamela Dalton's illustrated telling of The Story of Christmas is what I would consider a rare find. This is a story that is the crux of most Christian beliefs yet finding a version of the story that is appealing to both children and adults can be a daunting task. Often picture book versions of the story are much more cartoon in nature making them much too young for older readers and more mature versions of the story become quite boring for small children. Pairing the story with Pamela Dalton's beautiful artwork was a brilliant idea. Not only does the story come to life, but it reaches a far broader audience than most versions have in the past.

Through this version of The Story of Christmas readers follow along with the text from the King James version of the Bible as Pamela Dalton's gorgeous and intricate art bring the story to life. Our family will be reading this version for many years to come as it has quickly become a family favorite and I'm certain that other families in search of a high quality yet accurate portrayal of this important part of Christianity will love it as well.

This book follows the events of the Nativity as told in the King James Bible simply and truly. The art is absolutely exquisite! To quote from the book jacket, the artist worked in..."Scherenschnitte, a medium rooted in Pennsylvania-German folk art and steeped in an intimate appreciation of medieval and Renaissance Italian art..." It is a scissor cut art placed on a black background. It is tastefully done and will delight any child (or adult).

This is the book that you will buy as the beautiful, meaningful gift for that someone special!
