10 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Edward H. Wiser on September 28, 2000
Format: Paperback
This book was written many years ago by a minister who served in the churches that had been used by the Palatines many years earlier. His perspective is therefore interesting in comparison with more recent writings. Having read the same story in several other books, it seems to me that Rev. Cobb made more of an effort to understand the actions of Governor Hunter. The result is a sympathetic portrayal of the actions of both the governor and the settlers in their struggle to survive. He found that the real villains weren't in New York, but in London. The references that he cited in developing this view are unique, and invaluable in understanding the situation.

The book has these chapter titles: "Introduction", "The Palatinate", "The Exodus", "The Experiment", "The Failure", "The Promised Land" and "The Dispersion". I was particularly interested in his account of the German history leading up to the departure of many of the Palatines. He traces the history of some of the founders of Germantown, Pa in some detail as well as the experience of William Penn's "experiment".
The book has a good surname index, which makes it useful for genealogical research.

Chose it for a gift. It was enthusiastically received. Book is very interesting because it is close to our geographic area. It has names and years and residents that lived during the time. Not necessarily for ancestral research but many last names are recognized. (joyce haldeman)

Relishing this wonderful book!! Very thankful this reprint of the original 1897 publication is available for historians and genealogists. The overall breadth of historical events covered which pertain directly to the Palatine Germans, as well as the depth of insight the author reaches as he brings his narrative to life for the reader is really outstanding. Thank you, amazon.com, for a most pleasant transaction! Received my book in perfect condition, right on time as you promised.

Format: Paperback
The book is a little on the dry side and tends to ramble, but over all not a bad book. Some questionable statements about the loyalties to the Crown. It tends to portray the Palatines as all taking up arms against the Crown, which is open to question ie. American or British view.
