this is a useful tool for the series. it tests the same level of understanding of each chapter as the questions suggested in the activity book does. neither requires the child to recall every single detail. it does not seem to be necessary, as the activity book covers the same level of question plus provides many additional activities), but when you homeschool if you like to incorporate written tests, then this makes it easy.
on the other hand, if you are trying to encourage deeper understanding, i think the activity book goes farther, as the questions are open ended and the child has the opportunity to expand upon his answers, and the parent can expand his questioning appropriately to encourage recall. the tests do not do this.

This book is working out perfectly as a supplement to Story of the World Vol. 1. I bought the Activity Book as well, but am not using it, as it seems geared towards really young kids. My 5th grader finds the tests neither too hard or too easy. He can do the tests on his own without help with additional directions from me.

Story of the world Volume 1:
I have 4th and 5th grade girls who are using this so I will answer from that point of view. A lot of ancient history is not going to be retained at this age, however impressions of major figures and the geography tends to stick. My daughters probably wont be able to tell you what year a king reigned after this but they can tell you all about ancient Egypt and China. We add books from the library to each chapter and I look up videos, and magazines on the topic. Overall I believe if your willing to take that approach with this book then your child will get much more of an history of the time then any textbook is going to give. Children tend to remember stories and fables and this book has them.
The Test and Answer Book:
The questions are well thought out and make the child think, but are not complicated. The questions are completely from the chapter tested on and not prior chapters. I do think that the full 16-20 questions per chapter may be a lot considering some of the chapters the tests cover are not very long. We do use the entire test. We do not test after each chapter typically we test after a subject transitions.
Each Chapter has its own test which includes:
Approx 4-5 Fill in the blank questions
8-10 Multiple choice questions
and 4-7 True/False questions
Easy to use and copy a great compliment to: Story of the World, Volume 1:Ancient Times if you are looking to save a few dollars you could use the Review Questions found in the Activity Book instead of having a traditional test after each chapter. The description given of the product when I purchased it and my use of the Test and Answer Key have been consistent with what I expected to receive.

This program is great for all ages, we have the question book and the activities book as well. I am using it on my children 4 through 8. My 8 year old is a 5th grade level. All of my children love to hear the stories. The older two do the questions and some times the extended reading while the younger two love the Map and coloring pages. They recently asked about future lessons and when I explained in four years we would repeat the lessons they were thrilled to find out they would learn it more in-depth the next time. We recomend this program to all homeschooling families.

My child likes the easy to read format and the additional activities this book offers. This is one of her favorite subjects. As a parent, I appreciate how simple the lesson plans are to use. A good book for grade schoolers.

My kids love these books! History is their favorite part of the day and it is very well done. It is an easy curriculum for home-schooling moms to teach.

I think this history curriculum is great because it follows the classical model of introducing history chronologically and it challenges the students to reiterate the information that they have heard in their own words, thus making history their own. I also like the fact that the history projects can double as art instruction. I really love the additional reading book list available for each chapter. I typed up the list for each chapter and gave it to my public library. Each week, they pull the books for me and all I have to do is go and pick them up. My kids have a great time reading the books that are on their level and then I read the more difficult to read books to them. I have also given them some of the harder books to them to challenge them and it has increased their reading ability because the books keep their interest. It is amazing to go places and hear refereneces made in other people's conversation about things we have been studying in history because the kid's eyes light up and they say, "Mamma! We know all about Tutankhamen!" or whatever it is we happen to be studying at the time. I wholehartedly recommend this curriculum.

We used the story of the world book, workbooks, and tests for history last year for 3rd and 4th grade. We took turns reading aloud, talked about the stories while we colored the pictures in the workbook, and did some of the suggested projects. The next day we took the quiz in this book. It was nice to have a way to gauge how much the girls remembered, and the tests are short enough not to be tedious, I think they actually liked taking them. I love this whole history program, it really keeps the kids engaged.
