Fostering an appreciation of pre-Reformation Catholicism,

As per Francis Cardinal Gasquet's preface to William Cobbett's 19th century "History of the Protestant Reformation in England and Ireland": "Viewed in its social aspect, the English Reformation was in reality the rising of the rich against the poor" (pp. vi). Tragically, Cobbett's work is so laced with invective and discrimination, that he does injustice to his own basic premise. Yet, it sent me in search of Eamon Duffy's "The Stripping Of The Altars" - a vastly superior (though quite difficult) work with this same basic premise. No one can come away from Duffy's painfully referenced work, honestly willing to accept "time-honored" biases against pre-Reformation Catholicism. Yet, such biases seem to continue to thrive, even among (perhaps especially among) many who consider themselves intellectually superior.
