Book Description

The Strontian Factor is a chilling, edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller A must read for fans of Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsyth and John Grisham

The evidence is scant, the connection unknown and the reason a mystery. Jamie Strachan, a top-class defence analyst, is faced with a seemingly impossible task: he must link the death of his brother-in-law to an ex-Fallschirmjäger and a devout pharmaceutical magnate.

With the help of a high-ranking police officer and the tacit support of the Secretary to the British Cabinet, Jamie exposes a scheme of immense magnitude, the consequences of which would lead to a conflagration between the West, and the Islamic and the Developing worlds.

Mason Forbes takes the reader on a breathtaking, high-speed quest from the Highlands of Scotland to the Pacific Northwest and back to Europe in an attempt to prevent a crime against humanity.

Pre-release review from Meghan a TOP 500 REVIEWER

Mason Forbes’ ‘The Strontian Factor’ brings the reader to a familiar territory—one that earlier writers like Robert Ludlum had structured and crafted. But to say that Forbes’ book “is like Ludlum’s” does not do it justice, as Forbes has his own literary style—his writing is as crisp and sharp as a broadsword, Forbes is clearly a seasoned author in complete control of his powers. And it’s most obvious on every page of this book.

At the heart of ‘The Strontian Factor’ is Jamie Strachan’s struggle to come to terms with the deaths of people close to him. But even as he attends his brother-in-law’s funeral, Strachan wastes no time in trying to connect the dots, poking his nimble mind-fingers into what doesn't seem to make sense—that is, until a suspicious accident occurs and sets off his internal alarm. Someone’s out to kill another of the few people closest to his heart, and Strachan must know why—and how—in order to stop it in its tracks—only it’s so much bigger than his own personal affairs. And from here on the cascade of consequences will grip you and compel you to keep on turning the pages.

Forbes has the uncanny knack for “weaving” intricate narrative threads together, cleverly herding them all to a single gestalt. It’s almost breathtaking to “watch” this take place: from Strachan to Clive Patterson’s team to the many ordinary lives that serve as collateral damage yet still enrich and “humanize” and make the story much more believable—and therefore lends it that all-important emotional gravitas.

Overall, ‘The Strontian Factor’ is an instant classic suspense thriller—everything you've ever liked about seemingly unstoppable villains, cleverly written with believable characters, and the tight sinew of suspense and layer of mystery that strongly hold the plot together—it’s all here. But as the book is not really the sum of its parts, I’ll just emphasize: this is a hugely entertaining book. Fans of the genre will “devour” every word of this book as it deserves all the five-star ratings it eventually gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars !!An Absorbing, Gripping Read!! February 19, 2014
By Karl
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a cleverly written story with perfectly gauged amounts of intrigue and mystery. Jamie Strachan, a soldier within the intelligence core, cannot help but feel that there is more than just coincidence connecting two accidents, one involving his brother in-law and the other involving himself and his nephew Nick. Pushing his instincts as an analytical thinker aside, he tries not to dwell on what has happened, but is unable quell his thirst for an answer believing there is something not quite right about the incident in which he was involved. Meanwhile, Detective chief superintendent Clive Patterson is investigating a case with the same gut feeling that something is amiss. Together they try to get to the bottom of what is going on. This is a book you can easily lose yourself in, with so much detail and a well thought out story line it was incredibly hard to put down! As the story unravels you find yourself asking more questions, which I loved, there is nothing worse than a predictable book! And Mason N Forbes has done a wonderful job by avoiding just that! I will definitely be looking out for more of his works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Artfully constructed plot December 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The Strontian Factor is an exciting, tension building, and artfully constructed plot with plenty of action, drama, twists and turns and an intriguing and thought provoking storyline.

Jamie Strachen is visiting Scotland for the funeral of his brother in law Bob Ferguson whose death seemed a tragic accident but what was the meaning of Bob’s final words for Jamie and was his death more sinister than it seemed.

On Tyneside, Detective Chief Superintendant Clive Patterson is called to attend an incident on a passenger ferry from Amsterdam, but it is a different passenger on the ferry that catches his attention.

When another near fatal accident happens to Jamie and his nephew Nick, Jamie begins to wonder if it is just coincidental or is there a more sinister explanation for what is happening.

What is the connection between all these events? Who is the mastermind behind them and can a plan with devastating results against humanity be thwarted?

So, we begin a thriller with an amalgam of fascinating characters, both good and evil, plot twists, murder, kidnapping, heart in the mouth moments and multiple storylines that all come together to bring this thriller to an exciting conclusion.

The Strontian Factor is compulsive reading and once started is hard to put down.
I loved this novel and would highly recommend it. Another great novel from author, Mason Forbes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Disappoint February 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mason N. Forbes takes on some very daunting themes and subplots within his novel, The Strontian Factor. The reader has to be ready to make those leaps into religious and supernatural aspects while also being able to keep it in its crime/mystery genre.

I found our protagonist, Jamie Strachon to be a very dynamic and fully developed character the readers can appreciate for his talents and liked for his charisma. The language is sophisticated, but it keeps moving at a rapid pace - keeping along with the high-stakes nature of the storyline. There were several climactic moments where I felt like I needed to get through reading before I put the book down - but that only lead me to another high point. Settings and emotions were expressed vividly by the author, lending to his expertise as a meticulous writer who never neglects the details. I enjoyed every page of this novel - especially the unexpected turn of events toward the end of the book. The Strontian Factor is definitely a hit and does not disappoint!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant thriller June 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When you open the pages of a Mason N. Forbes novel you know you are in the hands of a pro. You may think you know look and feel of determination, but you've never met a man quite like Jamie Strachan. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this. Clive Patterson a detective launches Jamie on a mole hunt unlike anything in spy fiction, one that takes the reader into the underground of Europe and America and ends up in a landscape of paranoia and betrayal in Islamic nations ”The Strontian Factor” is a maze of deception and double dealing about a world where everything is written in zeroes and ones and nothing can be trusted. Another brilliant thriller, about deceit, and dishonor. Very entertaining. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Thriller! May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"The Strontian Factor" is a fast-paced thriller that promises to keep your pulse pounding from the very first chapter all the way through to the jaw-dropping conclusion. Mason Forbes turns the thriller genre on its ear with over-the-top action and psychological suspense within a tangled web of mystery and intrigue the likes of which we haven’t seen since Thomas Harris and Frederick Forsyth.

The gritty and rousing atmosphere of the story is often juxtaposed with thoughtful character sketches that compel us to either love, hate, or fear the well-developed personalities that leap off the pages. In addition to his unrivaled character development, Forbes deftly crafts a taut thriller that overlaps with an obsessive mystery to create an unparalleled intensity of emotion.

This is the first book I've read by Mason Forbes, but I guarantee it will not be the last.
