Book Description

Jacquelin Cangro is back with more essays from underground New York. In this follow up to The Subway Chronicles: Scenes from Life in New York, all of the tales are her own. From run-ins with subway preachers and the Chinese Curses Lady to Pickles the dachshund to the man whose girlfriend bit his ear off, she documents the hilarious, poignant, and thought-provoking adventure that is the New York City subway. Her original voice chronicles the highs and lows of discovering who you are while living in an indomitable city with a character all its own. Together these essays create a fresh and real portrait of one woman's attempt to find her own New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific stories February 26, 2013

I really enjoyed this collection of stories about the New York subway. Just wish it could have been longer. Jacquelin Cangro has a way of pulling you in with her dry wit and gift for description. Each story is so different and compelling. Some will make you laugh and others will make you gasp. I hope she has more books in the works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! January 5, 2013

I enjoyed this collection of stories very much. Each one provided a vignette of a subway scene, and I could see and hear (and sometimes even feel and SMELL!) the scenes as clearly as if I were in the subway cars with the author. If you want to experience New York City subways at their most entertaining, then definitely check out this really well-written collection.

More About the Author

My first book, The Subway Chronicles: Scenes from Life in New York, was published in 2006 (Penguin/Plume). It's a collection of essays about the crazy, sad, thoughtful things that can happen riding the New York City subway system.

I've completed my first novel, We Happy Few, a coming-of-age story set on the US homefront during WWII. Read more about it and other projects I'm working on at www.jacquelincangro.com.

In the meantime, I post my random thoughts on my blog: http://jacquelincangro.wordpress.com. Things like:

I live in Brooklyn, NY, in a 5th floor walk-up. You might think this keeps me in shape. It doesn't.

The best movie ending ever is Cinema Paradiso. Hands down.

I keep a stack of books near my bedside that I'd like to read, but couldn't possibly finish in a lifetime. Right now I'm working on Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. From time to time I'll post book reviews and other writerly thoughts.

The red velvet cake from Cake Man Raven makes me very happy; if you're ever in New York City, get yourself a slice. You won't be sorry.

Sometimes I edit other people's novels. I like it, my rates are reasonable and people tell me that I'm pretty good at it. If you've got some pages floating around, send me a message.

My dog, an English Springer Spaniel, was adopted from the NY ACC. He does goofy things. I write about them.

My blog is one component of me trying to figure how to live more deliberately, like one of my heroes, Henry David Thoreau. When I've uncovered a nugget or two about how be more present and simplify, I'll share it around. Maybe it will resonate with you, too.
