Book Description

April 25, 2012
This covetable cookbook is a greatest-hits collection from Sugar Cube, a tiny pink food cart in Portland, Oregon, that is thronged daily by hungry hordes craving voluptuous sweets intensified with a spike of booze, a lick of sea salt, or a "whoop" of whipped cream. Sugar Cube founder and baker Kir Jensen left the fine-dining pastry track to sell her handmade treats on the street. Recipes for 50 of Kir's most enticing cupcakes, cookies, tarts, muffins, sips, and candies are made more irresistible (if possible!) by 32 delicious color photographs. Sassy headnotes and illustrations that resemble vintage tattoos liven up this singular boutique baking book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual flavor combinations - right up my alley June 7, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I live in Portland, OR but I have yet to taste Kir's tasty treats at her Sugar Cube cart. I have heard many good things about them though, and the cart is on my places-to-eat-at-soon list!
I flipped through this book at Costco, and I knew I had to buy it. Majority of the recipes are very unique; she has a lot of the salty-sweet flavor combos throughout the book which I love!
It's a strawberry season here in Oregon. I saw her recipe for Badonkadonk Shortcake, and that was all I needed... 2 pints of Hood strawberries, a pint of thick local Jersey-cow cream and a bunch of basil later, we were in heaven. It's was the best shortcake I've ever eaten/made (see my photo in the images). The basil syrup just put it over the top! And Kir's suggestion to use the leftover basil syrup for Watermelon-Basil Margaritas was a great idea!
Next on my list are the Curried Carrot Cupcakes, the Roasted Banana Ice Cream and/or one of her famous Panna Cottas.

I highly recommend this book to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars How sweet it is! May 2, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I love this book! Not only does it offer some amazing recipes but it includes a lot of helpful content like how to stock your pantry and it's a fun read to boot with lots of great photos! I've eaten several of these treats at the Sugar Cube. Her cooking philosophy was born from a long line of cooking positions at prestigious restaurants but boils down to a sweetly simple approach, that anyone can bake with a small space and simple supplies. A total ratatouilleian approach that is beautifully conjured. This would make a great gift for anyone from a first time baker to an accomplished pastry chef. I can't wait to pre-heat the oven!

3.0 out of 5 stars The recipes are geared more for adults April 17, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is ok. I knew it would have recipes that would be out of the norm, but I didn't think they would be that far out there. I loved learning about chocolate. I never knew about all the nuances in flavors. This is more like a gourmet receipe book. I have older children, so I thought they might like the desserts, but they aren't going over so well. For adults who enjoy a more refined pallate, however, this book may be perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Damn Cookbook I Own!!! May 4, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This little beauty of a cookbook is much more than just instructions for making addictive sweet treats. The pages and layout are soooo beautiful. Wait til you see the wonderful full color pictures on nearly every page. In addition to deserts, there is an amazing (read: if you don't make this you haven't lived yet) strata recipe. I made it last night for a "breakfast for dinner" and my mind was blown away. Thank you Kir Jensen for doing what you do. And thanks even more for sharing your secrets and tips with the rest of us.

This is a unique baking book, written by a real professional who bakes and sells out of a 8 x 14 foot food cart in Portland. It contains basic background information about ingredients and organization and excellent recipes that are a twist on the usual. The author displays a great sense of humor (Marionberry "crack" coffeecake) and a practicality of approach making this book great for a young or home baker, but the quality is way above average. The only drawback is that the recipe ingredients are listed only by measure, not weight, so a professional baker will probably have to do the conversion. I like that the author's voice really comes through, making the book entertaining to read. I'm buying extras to give friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly delicious recipes! January 6, 2013
Format:Hardcover
I have made the Rosemary's Baby cookies several times over the holidays. Everyone loves them, very buttery and fragrant. The Spicy Nutz are to die for and I must admit addicting. The Breakfast Clafoutis were picture perfect, I posted my photo of them on Facebook making all my friends very very jealous.
I am fortunate enough to live in Portland where I have access to "Sugar Cube". I've only gone once so far but the Panna Cotta was the best I've ever had!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration November 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have a small bakery in North Carolina and am always looking for new things to serve my customers. This book is full of recipes my clients LOVE. Since the desserts are from the Portland Or. area these are new to them or are a twist I haven't considered. Hope you like it as much as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected... June 12, 2013

Kir has some truly original and creative recipes. That being said, a lot the the flavor combinations are a little to exotic for most of the midwesterners I'd be feeding with recipes from this book. It's a good book but it didn't meet my expections (through no fault of the book-completely my own tastes). I'm keeping it because there are a few recipes I'll likely use/try but it's not a 'bake every recipe right away' kind of book for me.
