From the Author

The Summer Solstice Enchanted derived from simplicity and was spun into magic through the eyes of Katrina Summer, our female protagonist. I wanted to write a story that was as realistic as possible while incorporating supernatural elements in a unique way. Above all, I wanted to entertain my readers with a bit of suspense, a progressive romance, and an exciting new mythology. Enjoy :)

A well written, interesting story that centers on Katrina, a 16 year old. Unknowns’ to her, she was born into a family that descends from a Greek goddess. Kat’s life, so far, is living a life of poverty, in a small town in North Carolina, with her mother. When her mother dies, just before Kat turns 16, she goes to live with her incredibly rich, estranged, paternal Grandmother in Florida. It is here that Kat’s powers begin to manifest with the help of her Grandmother. Her powers are meant for the good of helping humanity. Of course there are evil forces to confront and hopefully defeat. Kat meets other teens there, but has trouble fitting in.
I found this to be a fast pace read with intriguing characters and good tension. K.K. Allen has nicely fleshed out her main characters, even the mean girls as well as Kat’s love interest. So what does the Summer Solstice have to do with it? You will need to read this book which I highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this debut by K.K. Allen! Kat is such a great character that I felt like I knew her. That's how seamless the writing is. It's the kind of writing that you literally feel like you are watching things unfold first hand. With an enchanting story and fabulous descriptions I did nothing else until I finished the page. Now it's going to be agonizing waiting for book two!

Thank you Netgalley and K.K. Allen for the in exchange for this review!

In this wonderful story filled with magic, a budding romance, mystery and Greek Mythology, Katrina(Kat) Summer's becomes a powerful heroine.
I watched Kat change from a shy and nervous 15 yr. old who is heartbroken from the recent loss of her mother, to a vibrant and confident 16 yr. old full of questions. Many questions that she seeks the answers to.
After the mysterious heart attack that killed her mother, Kat was sent to live with the grandmother Rose, whom she never got the chance to know. Immediately, things start to get really weird and the story fires up as intriguing events occur all around Kat. Thanks to Charlotte, the sweet "helper" of her grandmother, Kat is able to keep control of herself without breaking down. But as days go by, it raises her arm hairs knowing that her grandmother Rose, who is practically a goddess to the town, is hiding something HUGE from her. Kat delves into her new life and on her 16th birthday, she finds out what most of those secrets are; and she strives to remember, "What makes us most powerful, can also kill us". She has to learn many new traditions to help her control her being, as she continues to find comfort in making new friends...especially Alec, her handsome neighbor.
I personally enjoyed this story very much. The plot was intriguing with a great set of characters and I really loved how the author tied in Greek Mythology! Brilliant! My favorite characters are Kat(of course), Charlotte(because she was so sweet and comforting) and Alec(because he was just what Kat needed in this story). But I am getting ready to read the next in the series, "Equinox" and Im sure some things will shock me, I'm ready for it though!
I definitely recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a magical and intriguing story with a bit of romance and mystery; it's a great mixture of each!
Great job K.K. Allen on a great story!

This was such a light fun read, I loved it.

Kat, recently orphaned, moves in with her estranged Grandmother and weird things start happening to her. Her sight and hearing senses become impossibly accurate. Disturbing and dangerous dreams haunt her sleep. She’s confused about what’s happening and her Grandmother isn’t giving her much. Plus, she’s lonely, and nervous about being the new kid in school. Then along comes the handsome neighbor boy. He gives her some confidence, but the two girls who feel she’s infringing on their territory give her equal measures of trouble.

Author K.K. Allen has filled this story with all the drama of a young girl in this situation. There’s suspense woven in through the enigmatic Grandmother, the unfolding of the family history, and the magic capabilities Kat is learning to control. Unbeknownst to her, danger is creeping up as she comes to the attention of evil forces. But, Allen keeps it light with the beach town setting and the threads of romance.

I recommend this lovely story. It was quite an enjoyable read.

So, let me start off by saying: I have a love of Greek mythology. I have a love if fairy tales. I love retellings/uses of both! K.K. Allen is right up my ally. With superb writing, that sucks you in, she moment she opens the story. This is a book I look forward to sharing with my daughters, when they reach "young adult" age. With no bad language, & sweet romance, it's a clean read. But don't think it's all sugar, no, this book has spice as well, with enough action to keep you from putting the book down. A+!

I can't tell you how impressed I am with this debut novel! It's so well-written, so full of rich description, that it places you right there alongside the main character, Kat, in the strange new world of magic she finds herself in.
"The Summer Solstice" has a modern-day fairytale quality to it. On one level, Kat is a typical teen. She's just trying to find her place in the world after her mother dies unexpectedly, and she's forced to live with her mysterious grandmother, Rose, whom she's never met. On the other hand, there are strange dreams, and mysterious powers that the locals whisper about behind closed doors.
There's something here for everyone: mystery, action, fantasy, and even romance. So many Young Adult books seem to concentrate solely on the romantic aspects that the over-all story falls flat. That isn't the case, here. Happily, Ms. Allen made the bold choice to not make the entire book about the budding relationship between Kat and the boy next door, Alec. The connection is there; you certainly feel it along with Kat, but this book is more about a girl discovering herself and her family for the first time. The ending was perfectly timed to leave me wanting more. I congratulate Ms. Allen on a job well done.
I'm really looking forward to reading the next book to this series, "The Equinox."
