Pat Head Summitt, head coach of women's basketball at the University of Tennessee, led her team to the national championship in 1987. This book by her colleague, physical education professor Lay, covers the subsequent year, and traces the history of women's sports at the school from the days when athletic activity for females was exclusively intramural, to the time when spectators cheered the Lady Vols to national victory. The portrait of Summitt, who herself had a notable career as a player, includes glimpses of the team members, who came close to, but did not recapture the national championships in 1988. Young women interested in sports will find this an inspiring book. Photos not seen by PW.
