Book Description

October 19, 2010
The Sunset Cookbook is the first masterwork collection of recipes selected from the extensive archives of Sunset magazine. With over 1,000 recipes from the more than 110 years of the magazine's history, this book represents the best of American cooking, both its traditional cookery and its culinary inventiveness. Fueled by local ingredients, the creativity of its cooks, and diverse ethnic influences, from Native American to Mexican to Polynesian to Asian, American cooking has come into its own, and Sunset has been there from the beginning.

The Sunset Cookbook covers everything from appetizers to preserves and pickles as well as Sunset's unique approach to fresh eating, which can be found in dishes like vegetarian main courses-such as stews, salads, pastas, stir-fries, and casseroles. Included are more than 100 recipes for the grill, like Grilled Oysters with Chipotle Glaze, Hoppin' Wine-Smoked Turkey, and classic Santa Maria Barbecue, made with beef tri-tip; recipes based on fresh local ingredients such as Pan-fried Trout with Smoked Salmon, Baby Artichoke Antipasto, Soy Mustard-Glazed Buffalo; and favorite dishes that found their start in the West such as Cedar-Planked Salmon, Baja Fish Tacos, and Baked Chiles Rellenos, just to name a few.

Long-awaited by Sunset readers and packed with signature recipes, The Sunset Cookbook is sure to take its place among the classics and appeal to the new generation of home cooks across the country who have grown up on fresh flavors that are the hallmark of new American cooking.

4.0 out of 5 stars At Last! October 29, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just received my copy of The Sunset Cookbook. As a westerner, I feel like I now have a big fat cookbook aimed at me! Most general reference cookbooks try, more or less successfully, to be all things to all people. Nevertheless, they reflect the part of the country of their origins. ("Joy," for example, is as warm as the American Midwest.) This is not necessarily a bad thing as every region of our continent has made major contributions to the whole. It's just that those of us on the left coast and inland have never had our own basic cookbook.

First impressions --

PLUSES. 1000 recipes featuring the ingredients, especially our splendid produce, and common techniques of our region. A couple of examples -- 1) most of the crab recipes feature and were tested with Dungeness and king crab, and 2) there is an extensive chapter on grilling. Recipes appear to include a balance between iconic western dishes and newer interpretations. It is also physically beautiful with many color photographs.

LIMITATION. Does not have annotated lists (and pictures) of ingredients such as is the case with recent Better Homes and Gardens and some other cookbooks.

I can hardly wait to begin trying the recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource November 8, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been subscribing to Sunset for years, and in my husband's words the recipes "have never done us wrong." If this were just a collection of old favorites from the magazine, that would be enough, but it's also an excellent resource on everything from buying fish to wine for every meal to regional produce. As a San Francisco resident, I also love how much it fits into Northern California culture. They include recipes from Pizzeria Delfina and other famous local spots, as well as fried chicken with coleslaw (ala Bakesale Betty's) and banh mi recipes. Beyond that, it's also a well designed book that's easy to use. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recipes are typical Sunset: quick, accessible, delicious November 14, 2010
By G. Tang
Format:Hardcover
I have been a fan of sunset recipes for years and was delighted to find out they had released a cookbook. I bought the book last week and have tried six recipes. I am NOT a regular cook as my husband is the cook in the family but my three teenagers and hubby have enjoyed all the recipes Ive made. The chicken with apricots and garbanzos is a surprisingly tasty and unique dish. I made the chicken with winter greens and pappardelle tonight and it was a hit with sherry, lemon and chard. I always make the dish exactly per the recipe then modify as needed when I make it again, but I don't feel like Sunset's recipes need modification. I'm so pleased with this book and have lined up my recipes for the next week. So thrilled! Buy this book - you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sunset never lets us down! November 10, 2010
Format:Hardcover
As Sunset subscribers for many years, we've both been eagerly awaiting receipt of Sunset's new cookbook, and have not been disappointed. Many of our faves from over the years are in here, along with high altitude info which we greatly appreciate here in Denver.

We've never been disappointed, as we cook a lot and try those recipes that include our favorite ingredients. Those that don't sound like something we'd enjoy or that use things we can't find here in Colorado we just skip over, and with over 1,000 recipes to choose from it's easy to find many to enjoy!

True, there are just a few pictures but being familiar with Sunset that didn't turn us off.

2.0 out of 5 stars a disappointment January 23, 2011
By MP
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have a dozen Sunset small cookbooks and use them all the time. Great recipes. But this new large one is a disappointment. I have two problems with it. First, the recipes are needlessly complicated. The Tres Leches cake recipe took me three hours to make with complicated steps like beating the batter in a metal bowl in a pot of boiling water etc. Tres leches cake is a basic sponge cake soaked in three different types of milk. An hour tops. And after all that work the cake didn't even rise as the Sunset recipe has no leavening and the egg whites are not beat seperately and folded in. The other problem is the incomplete index. Many recipes aren't listed in the index i.e.Japanese soy braised chicken on page 358 is not listed in the index under chicken. A disappointment from a source that usually has great cookbooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love Sunset! January 21, 2011
By bigmama
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I moved away from California about 20 years ago and settled in the Midwest. I have missed my Sunset Magazine and the recipes it always brought to me. This huge volume has helped me catch up on what I have been missing. I find the recipes to be refreshingly creative and enjoyable. I recommend to anyone who wants to brighten their meals with West Coast cuisine.
