Book Description

One idyllic family, or so it seemed…

A wondrous tale about the joys of family and how sparse our lives would be without them! A perfect read for fans of Carole Matthews and Kathy Lette.

The party was supposed to be the ultimate surprise, but instead it turned out to be the most ordinary event of the day…

When warring sisters Suzie and Liz come together to organise a 40th anniversary party for their parents, they struggle to keep their personal dramas in check and make it a magical day.

Suzie is struggling to keep her marriage afloat and Liz is keen to retain her Queen Bee status. Their aunt and mother are much the same, with Lilly and Fleur at loggerheads over their very different lives.

Meanwhile Suzie's daughters Hannah and Megan are learning that growing up isn't as easy as their parents profess.

As the champagne flows and the drama unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that this is a party that no-one will ever forget – but will there be a happy family left at the end?

Editorial Reviews

Review

'An excellent insight into our typical lives and relationships. I'm sure women everywhere will be able to identify with ... this eventful story.' Closer Magazine 'Like a glass of Frascati after a long day! Delightful.' Kate Long. 'The wonderful Sue Welfare returns with this slick, wickedly witty and tightly plotted tale about family secrets, little white lies and the things you don't want your children to know. Full of her trademark down-to-earth humour and fabulously drawn characters, this book is an absolute joy. Do yourself a favour and lock yourself away for the weekend with it, a big box of chocolates and a few glasses of electric grape-juice. Smashing!' Milly Johnson. "Sue Welfare's clever take on domestic dilemmas and feuding families has a piquant charm that crosses the generations and puts the lives and loves, hopes and fears of everyday folk firmly in the spotlight... A treat for romantics of any age." Lancashire Evening Post

5.0 out of 5 stars ~ A Great Escape! April 11, 2011
Format:Paperback
A Surprise Party by Sue Welfare is a fantastic book! Welfare has that talent that grabs you right at the beginning and keeps you reading! She is so quick witted that I never wanted to put this book down. The story paints a picture of the dynamics of a family ~ several generations~ and it has you laughing, cheering, cringing and thinking 'don't do it!'. It's somebody else's family...but it might just be mine (or yours)! I felt like I was in the middle of it all! Without giving any of it away, I have to say that I loved this book! Everyone can relate! If you want a bit of good humor and a wonderfully written story buy it today!
