This book is an amazing opportunity for anyone interested in real survivor stories to get a glimpse into the impact that these violent crimes have had on the brave survivors who have shared their story. I am an author of one of the essays included in this book. Currently I am teaching an Intensive Victim Impact class to sex offenders at the Adult Corrections Institution in Cranston, RI. As part of my class I have the inmates read this book. It is so important for survivors to keep talking about sexual violence and it is just as important for offenders to be educated as to the impact of sexually based crimes.

This collection is an act of love, and healing; these are stories with heart. As a person who has struggled with PTSD myself, reading these narratives was poignant, relieving, and at times troubling.
Most often, I felt incredible relief. Sharing common experience, I felt my inner tensions still, like children at story time. They found longed-for human companionship, and sleep better henceforth. Writing, reading, or just knowing about this book, is a step along the path of healing.
For only $3.99, its a great buy. If it costed $6.99 I would rate it 4 stars.

I am 3/4 of the way through the book and I love it. Some parts are hard to get through because of how much pain the person who wrote it has endured. I believe I've cried a few times reading it and I'm not a very emotional person.

I bought this book as a therapist wanting to better understand the direct experiences of trauma survivors, and wanting to have stories to share with my clients about other people who had been through the same things they had been through. This book is perfect for both those purposes in many ways - except that the stories in it are overwhelming by white people. By my count, it looks like only 9 of the 291 stories are by people who identify as anything other than white/Caucasian - that's about 3%. I do give the authors a lot of credit for including information about demographics for each story - it's helpful, it's important, and it makes it easier to discern problems like this. But the near-lack of stories by people of color in the book is still a pretty big problem for me. I was particularly looking to find stories by men of color who had been sexually assaulted, and there are none at all included in this book.
Given that the authors are based in Philadelphia (where I also live and work - and where only 41% of our population is white), I have a very hard time imagining how they could have been unable to gather stories from people of more diverse backgrounds.
It's an amazing book in many ways, and I am glad it exists, but it could have been improved immensely by being more inclusive.
