From Booklist

After years as an absentee father, Coast Guard lieutenant Mike Stark doesn’t have a clue what to do when his ex leaves his two young daughters with him. His former wife hasn’t put a lot of effort into being a mother, and it shows. Veterinarian Diana Tuttle is the single mother of a rebellious teenage son. They can’t seem to communicate, and he has begun to hang out with an undesirable crowd. Still smarting from the end of their passionate affair, Diana and Mike both find themselves in Rescue Bay, where it’s impossible not to run into each other. It’s obvious to everyone but the two of them that they would make a perfect couple. Fortunately, no one in town is bashful about matchmaking. Jump’s endearing book, the second in her Sweetheart Sisters series after The Sweetheart Bargain (2013), will appeal to fans of Debbie Macomber and Susan Mallery. --Shelley Mosley

The Sweetheart Rules is the second in the Sweetheart Sisters series and the follow up to THE SWEETHEART BARGAIN, which I read last year and loved. I was really excited to get back to Rescue Bay, find out what was happening with the unstoppable Greta, a senior at the retirement home and a real firecracker. She’s got a deft hand at matchmaking, and she’s also fighting against some romance of her own with neighbour Harold Twohig. The story focuses on the romance of local veterinarian, Diana, and Mike, the best friend of the hero of the previous book, and a member of the Coast Guard stationed in Alaska.

Mike’s on vacation, which consists of looking after his two small daughters – kids he hasn’t really had a relationship with up to this point. Mike’s military to his very bones: things run on schedules, orders are given and expected to be obeyed, the world’s pretty much black and white. Good luck with that, because his daughters really don’t live that sort of lifestyle and before long everyone is frustrated, resentful, and/or crying.

I don’t think it’s any accident that Mike spends this vacay in Rescue Bay, where his best buddy Luke is living. Mike also had a fling the last time he was in town – with Diana. Diana’s pretty ticked, because things heated up between them and then he was just gone, leaving nothing more than a note. Diana’s pretty stressed, too – her teenage son Jackson is really struggling, isolating himself from his friends, making some bad choices. By chapter two I learned that Diana also has her own demons to battle…wow.

At the beginning of the book I think I was as tense as Mike, trying to deal with those girls. He barked orders, one daughter threw tantrums to get her way, and the other one copped attitude and called him “dude”.

I really liked this story of Shirley Jump's. A perfect way to escape life's crap for a few hours. The Sweetheart Sisters are at again with their matchmaking ways. And this time it is with the local Veterinarian and her neighbor's best friend. He is a man with 2 young daughters that need the special touch only a woman can give. I love the by play between Greta and Harold Twohig! Makes me laugh every time! A great book 2 in the Sweetheart Sisters series!

This was a great read for me! I read the first novel in this series, The Sweetheart Bargain, and while I did like it I kept thinking I wanted just a little bit more from the book. This book gave me that MORE! I loved watcing both Matt and Diana struggle with parenting issues and how they were almost parenting together without even realizing it. There was a ton of chemistry between the two of them, and for a time they were willing to ignore it for the sake of being parents, but they finally gave in and it was great! This story was sometimes easy, sometimes sad and it delivered the happily ever after I needed.

Matt was not a good father, he realized this about himself and what made this flaw palatable for me was the fact that he was working so hard to change. I thought little Ellie was hilarious, but it was much more difficult to read about Jenny. She was way too young to act like the adult, but she had to make up for a mother that was never around and a father she had only seen a few times. It was very sweet to watch Matt and Jenny find their way together.

I was sad every time the story went to Diana's son Jackson's struggles. Although most of us can sympathize with normal teenage angst and the drama that goes along with it, Jackson also has to deal with a father that is unwilling to give him the time of day. In the end, he had to see for himself what his dad was really like and Diana had to stop making excuses for his behavior. This experience made them closer than ever and was the first stop on the road to HEA for Matt and Diana.

All along I thought Matt would be the one to run from the relationship at the end but I was wrong. Although I will admit to some annoyance that this was pretty much what happened in the first Sweetheart Sisters novel, I was able to get over it quickly when I thought about it for a while and realized it made sense that both sisters would have some abandonment issues.

Certain things just grab my attention when I'm shopping for a potential new read and this book offered up a few of them. I love romances that are surrounded by a greater story involving family and friends. My attention can always be grabbed by a military hero. And then toss in some little old ladies full of larceny and set on a bit of matchmaking? Bam! You got me.

Mike Stark has a month of leave coming to him and he had some really hot plans involving a Caribbean island beach and a willing blond in a bikini. All that is derailed when his ex contacts him and tells him he needs to take his girls so she can sort some stuff out. Mike's connection to his little girls could truthfully be described as no connection at all. He sent money for their welfare, but that was it. Father of the year he was not. And now the three of them are stuck together for thirty days. Eight year old Jenny treats him to an attitude from her too adult looking expression and calls him 'dude' and three year old Ellie explodes into tantrums in the store aisle when she wants a new toy. He has no idea what to do. If these were new recruits at his Coast Guard station in Kodiak, he'd know exactly how to handle it. Into the mix steps the one person bound to make his day worse.

Diana Tuttle can't believe her eyes. It's Mike Stark, the man she had a whirlwind affair with and thought was The One until she whispered 'I love you' in the heat of passion and he dashed out her door leaving only a cold note stating they had had no expectations and he had to get back to post. Just the sight of him cuts her with pain and anger. He has his hands full with his two girls. She has some sympathy for him. After all, she's the mom of a morose fifteen year old boy.
