Book Description

With all the fire and passion of the ancient Romans, The Sword of Revenge follows in the epic footsteps of top ten bestseller The Pillars of Rome.

Rome has lost its greatest warrior - for Aulus, the doom-laden prophecy of forty years earlier has come to pass. It is now left to Lucius to defy the oracle's curse alone, and the corrupt and powerful senator leaves nothing to chance in his bid to survive. But one boy, alone in the world, holds the key to his fate, and the future of the Roman Republic.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The story is fascinating and expertly told - narrated intelligently and with elan. For readers who have liked Conn Iggulden's Emperor series this is required reading - and is historical fiction at its very best.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read! November 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second book in Jack Ludlow's trilogy `The Republic'. I daresay that his writing is even more interesting and expressive than in his first book. Indeed, his writing style allows the reader to establish strong emotional attachments with specific characters and their individual personas. I came to feel their joy, their pain, their rage, their frustration and much more; cheering the ones I liked and booing the ones I didn't.

There is a lot more drama, adventure, action and suspense in this novel compared to the first. The author's descriptions of Roman life are quite graphic, especially in the way slaves were treated and the daily hardships encountered by the common people.

In book two Aulus, the very likeable and famous Roman general, is dead and the Sybil prophesy we encountered in book one is partly fulfilled. Lucius, the conniving Roman senator now schools Aulus's elder son Quintus to be his political heir as his own son Marcellus is still too young for the task. Lucius's fate is revealed towards the end of the novel after many interesting events transpire within Rome, Spain, Sicily and in the Italian countryside.

In this novel the siblings of Lucius and Aulus take centre stage. Aquila and Marcellus reach manhood while Quintus and Titus take different paths to fulfill their destinies. The Sybil prophesy is still relevant and ties together all ensuing events.

I thoroughly enjoyed book two for its greater complexity in character development, the inclusion of more action, the incredible insights into Roman life and for a more intricate storyline.

I have already started reading book three.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Sword of Revenge (Republic Trilogy 2) December 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While I agree with the previous reviewer that the second book in the trilogy is excellent, they both have points that drag a bit and can be predictable. This is a coming of age novel for Aquila and Marcellus. It is also The transition of the old political hierarchy to the new. Read it and enjoy, it is a rare view of Republican Rome rather then Rome under the Emporers.
