Not Bad,

This review is from: The Sword of Bedwyr (Crimson Shadow) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book and series as a whole was a good read. I didn't find anything truly unique, but it was written well, and the story flowed nicely. If you want to read a light fantasy by a good author, I would recommend this book along with the final two Luthiens Gamble and The Dragon King.

After the death of friend and arena fighter Garth Rogar, young Luthien Bedwyr is set on a near impossible quest to free eriador. Stunningly described characters including Brind Amour the wizard (a famous NHL hockey player) and the esteemed oliver deburrows accompany Luthien as he discovers his fate. Armed with the a magical folding bow and the magical crimson cape Luthien tries to free Montfort, Caer Mcdonald Along with Sojourn, this is Salvatore's Greatest work yet.

Salvatore does it again! Great story,

R.A. Salvatore explores another new world in this book the first book in the Crimson Shadow trilogy. The world is no where near as developed as his world of Corona (Demon Wars), yet at the same time the story isn't as deep and moving either so it makes sense.
Fans of Salvatore looking for another 'Drizzt' novel here will probably be disappointed. This book, and trilogy, are meant as a light fantasy read and that is exactally what you get. The story is well told and the characters are well fleshed out. I may even go so far as to say this trilogy has one of the best Salvatore characters ever made in that of Oliver, but I'll let you be the judge of that. This book is fast paced and has enough action to keep everyone interested. There aren't as many plot twists as with Salvatore's other work, but I think that was intentional here as well. If you are new to the fantasy genre, or are looking for something different to read from your favorite author. Give this one a chance. Be careful not to expect too much from it though. Take it at face value and you will really enjoy the ride.

Major Disapointment,

That was one of the first books by R.A. Salvatore I read. It was a major disapointment for me. This trilogy does not come even close to the books written by Brooks, R.Jordan, Eddings and other fantasy authors. The plot is so-so and the book as the whole is just very poorly written. Yes, there is planty of adventures, dragons, wizards, etc but all of that is very predictable and author just brushes thorugh them without much explanaition and character development. The only good thing about this book is that it is probably the best out of the whole trilogy: the second one was just dreadfull, and the last one was about the same level as the "Sword of Bedwyr". As the whole I would not recommend it. I just hope that other Slavatore's work are of the higher level.

Best Author To Read,

To say I'm a big Salvatore fan is putting it mild. If there was only one author in the world you could read then that should be Salvatore. The Sword of Bedwyr (Crison Shadow Trilogy) is very well written and brings your imagination to life. If you liked Lord of the Rings, then you'll love any of the Salvatore books available. Once you pick up this book you'll never be able to put it down. Enjoy!

If you want action,

If you want good adventure story with a lot of battles, heroes, villains and magic creatures, well, this is your book. The story of Luthien is hardly original, but it is extremely interesting. You can not put the book down, so... I reccomend it.

Disappointing work by Salvatore this time,

This review is from: The Sword of Bedwyr (Crimson Shadow) (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading the Cleric Quintet, and the Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies, I was excited to find this book. It was a disappointment though, and it seems weak compared to those other series. For some reason the story and characters just failed to interest me and it was more like reading a book written according to some recipe than a cohesive whole. All the usual Salvatore elements are there: protagonist, sidekick, villains and fantasy settings. But they didn't gel into anything believable or engaging so I can't recommend it. It was as if Salvatore tried to plug in these elements, expecting them to make an interesting story, but for me at least, it failed. Anytime I find myself hoping the protagonists are caught or killed, it's a bad sign. My opinion seems to be in the minority and the series may have improved after this first entry, but I'm not willing to buy the other books in that faint hope.

Nice idea, poor execution,

Salvatore's blatant lifting of names and characters from various sources, most notably Tolkien, makes it difficult indeed for me to take this novel seriously. Perhaps it's not intended to be completely serious, but Salvatore's calling his main male character Luthien (a very important *female* character in Tolkien's mythology) and his native land Eriador (the western part of Tolkien's Middle-earth), not to mention Oliver deBurrows, a "halfling" thief whose dialogue is almost lifted from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" really did me in, even though the story itself is not inherently flawed.

Unimaginative and uninspiring,

This trilogy is the first I have read of R. A. Salvatore's works, and I have to say it will be the last. The stories are very simplistic - the heroes full of (noisome) witty repartie and banter as they fight endless hordes of cyclopians (I wish I had a pound for every time the word `brute' is used substituted), wizard-dukes and other two dimensional foes. This really is sword & sorcery by numbers. There is no plot that piques your interest or pricks your sense of wonder; the heroes just go from same-old fight to same-old fight, which serves as interminable fillers in the progression from oppressed country in the first book to free country in the third book. If you're under 10 or easily pleased then you might like this. If, however, you prefer a little more from your fantasy then you should read J. R. R. Tolkien (anyone who hasn't, hasn't lived), J. V. Jones (for excellent realism), Robin Hobb (wonder plots and characters), Robert Jordan (for mega-quests), David Eddings (a little formulaic but fun), etc. This is one reader that hopes the Crimson Shadow stays hidden in his magic cape in future...

more great stuff by salvatore,
This review is from: The Sword of Bedwyr (Crimson Shadow) (Mass Market Paperback)
what can i say, i've been reading him forever, and he dosn't disapoint me at all. the characters are lively, and while ouraggeus at times, fun as hell. Oliver nad luthien are a great duo, with witty banter and fighting galore. just pick it up, you'll love it.
