About the Author

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid ’90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris and two cats named Augustus and Caligula, who think they run the place.

Ben Avery is a lead writer and editor with Kingstone Comics. His comic book career began when he was selected by George R.R. Martin to work as the script adaptor of the comic book fantasy miniseries The Hedge Knight, based on novellas by the New York Times best-selling author. After that, he went on to co-write/co-create the critically acclaimed Lullaby and The Imaginaries for Image Comics, co-create and write the children's literature inspired fantasy The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles, develop and write the historical epic Kingdoms for Zondervan, and the sequel miniseries The Hedge Knight II, published by Marvel Comics. Javier Saltares is a well-respected comic veteran with long creative stints at both Marvel and Dark Horse Comics with such projects as Wolverine, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight. In The Book of God he delivers a masterful performance in illustrating a divinely historical process.

Mike S. Miller is a veteran comic book artist, working on comic books ranging from Superman to Wolverine. Mike is also the cofounder and art director for Alias Enterprises and Cross Culture Entertainment.

I'm a GOT/ASOIAF junkie, and had sought out the three "Dunk & Egg" stories in print after finishing "A Dance of Dragons." To be honest, it was "The Mystery Knight" (D&E #3) that got me to read "A Game of Thrones." I didn't even know it was a story in the same world until midway through, and by the end, I was hooked.

The 3 (so far) "Dunk & Egg" tales take place a few generations before the events of A Game of Thrones- and they cover life in the fall out of the Targaryen schism known as the "Blackfyre" rebellion. Long story short, some Targ bastards got legitimized upon their King/Father's death, and an uprising for the Iron Throne happened. The Blackfyres lost, leaving the question of "Did you support the Black or the Red [Dragon]?" to be a dangerous political statement in its own right.

15 years after that uprising, its affects are still felt across Westeros.

The first 2 Dunk & Egg tales were made into graphic novels, and these editions are great. #1, the Hedge Knight introduces you Dunk & Egg and #2, the Sworn Sword, is a bit of standalone adventure. From what I understand, George RR Martin has plans for more of these, and they tend to be a bit more stand-alone in nature than his other writing.

In short, if you like the politics and intricacy of Westeros, but long for something a little less grim (but no less bittersweet), READ THESE. Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) is what Sansa Stark would call a "true knight," and would make good pals with the likes of Ned Stark, Davos Seaworth, and Brienne of Tarth.

If you like graphic novels and like GOT, this is the perfect marriage. I expected more action but got a great story with a satisfying ending. can't wait for the next Dunk and Egg story.

Great story and art, but the kindle fire edition is WORTHLESS unless you use a magnifying glass. I had assumed I could just flick and enlarge, but not so. Get the paper edition of this. Don't bother with the kindle

I think I like The Sworn Sword (The Hedge Knight 2) a little better than the first one. The first one was great and it did an awesome job of setting up the story but now we get to enjoy a real adventure with Dunk & Egg.

This graphic novel is beautifully illustrated just like the first one and kept me entertained throughout. Afterwards I looked for the final adaptation (The Mystery Knight) only to realize that that novella hasn't been adapted yet! This was disappointing but I did some research and it does seem like they are planning to complete the trio (hopefully soon).

The art is really cool. While I definitely recommend reading the novellas first, this is still a great graphic novel with a cool story and awesome art. A must have for any serious ASOIAF fan.

Anyone who is a true Game of Thrones fan will enjoy these graphic novels. They tell the story of Dunk and his young squire Egg (who later becomes King Aegon V). The Dunk and Egg story is a great prequel to the days before Robert's Rebellion when the Targaryens were still in full power. Aegon V (Aegon the Unlikely) served as King of the Seven Kingdoms 2 reigns before his grandchild Aerys II (The Mad King), last of the Targaryen Kings. This book and Part I (The Hedge Knight) follow "Dunk the Lunk" a young Hedge Knight who came from humble beginnings as a orphan from Flea Bottom in Kings Landing serving as squire to another Hedge Knight. When he passed, Dunk took his sword and shield and the oath of Knighthood. Dunk would rise and later be known as Ser Duncan the Tall (as he was over 7ft.) all the way to a Knight of the Kingsguard under Aegon V. Dunk and Egg's friendship was so strong that Aegon would later name his first born child Duncan Targaryen (Prince of Dragonflies).

Excellent follow-up to "The Hedge Knight." The first trade was good; this one is outstanding. The art, pacing, dialogue and overall story are wonderful. It's wordy for a comic (meaning: if you are tired of trades that you can read in 30 minutes, this is for you).

The story takes place about 80 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." It deals with the fall-out of a brief Targaryen civil war about a dozen years after it happened. The main character is Dunk, the Hedge Knight, and his squire, Egg. Both are good characters, but Egg is particularly interesting (based partly on who he is but especially on who he becomes).

To enjoy this, you must read the first trade. If you like "Game of Thrones" and comics, you will love this.

Final thought: what is the best way to prepare someone to rule one day? Think on it.
