For three decades, the nationally-syndicated cartoonist Nicole Hollander has channeled her ascerbic wit and razor-sharp sensibilities through the incomparable and irascible Sylvia, a Chicago original whose hilarious commentary on American life has won over millions of loyal readers. The Sylvia Chronicles presents Sylvia’s singular take on contemporary politics, from the early days of Reagan to the latter days of Palin. Along the way, she takes on subjects as varied as varied as the hazards of allowing death row convicts a last smoke, an imaginary exchange with Donald Rumsfeld’ younger brother, and the dangers of texting while driving an SUV and reaching across the seat for a snickers bar -- recording not only the most memorable, and memorably outrageous, events of the past three decades, but also the often-overlooked absurdities of our daily lives.

This book gives, in the best feminist tradition, a hilarious history of both the personal and political. Of course Sylvia hits it on the nose (who could miss that nose?). The strength of these cartoons lies not only in their dry and germane commentary, but also the drawings themselves, especially the ones of Sylvia's immediate environment. Although they don't move around a lot Sylvia and her cohorts, her daughter, her cats, and even her bartender live in the same world I do - one where everything is either funny or painful or very often both. My favorites are the ones where someone (usually Sylvia) is fulminating, and an off-stage voice (usually Rita) wants to palliate her with something delicious and effective like a carrot cake and a Zoloft. It is great to have a huge dose of Sylvia whenever I want it.
This is a very funny comic collection. I'm a big fan of Sylvia but I her comic strip doesn't run in my local paper so I wanted to see what I've been missing. This didn't disappoint. Nicole Hollander has a very dry wit and is right on with her social take on the world.
I think Nicole Hollander's "Sylvia" is a wonderfully funny character. I've had this book for quite a while and still look at it and laugh. She has some classic lines in this book that we still quote. Sylvia is a quirky woman who can make me laugh time and again.
