Book Description

The Szasz Quotationary is a collection of excerpts and aphorisms from the writings of Thomas Szasz organized in 50 chapters arranged alphabetically by subject. For more than 60 years, Szasz has exposed the deceptive and coercive nature of the history, ideology and practice of psychiatry, calling mental illness “a myth,” involuntary commitment and treatment “a crime against humanity” and the insanity defense “incompatible with the principles of a free society.” His scathing critique of psychiatry has drawn the enmity of most of his colleagues and the admiration of those who believe as he does that coercive psychiatry has no place among liberty-loving people and should be abolished.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Philosopher For Our Time September 22, 2011
Verified Purchase
Tom Szasz' thought has been an inspiration to me for a lifetime. To me, he is a true philosopher, one whose thoughts help you live.

As a neurologist I saw patients with horrendous diseases like ALS and some who did not have ALS but thought they did. What I learned - among so much else - from Dr. Szasz is that I didn't have to fret about mental illness. I could divide problems into organic i.e. real disease and no disease and not worry about mental illness, a metaphor.

No disease means no disease. Fear, anxiety, "voices" (inner speech), depression, alcoholism etc etc etc aren't diseases, should not be treated with more drugs, the loss of civil rights or the acquisition of money and fame.

His thoughts aren't just about medicine. They are about thinking logically for oneself.

And they are distilled and organized in this Quotationary by a master of the art, Leonard Roy Frank.

Ten dollars AND it is voice enabled - this is the deal of the century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb compendium of Szasz's thought. December 2, 2011
By Ryan F.
Master treasurer of aphorisms Leonard Roy Frank brings us a handpicked distillation of thought from the work of Thomas Szasz.

Thomas Szasz has commanded a central role in the critique of psychiatry for generations, to immerse oneself in Szasz's piercing erudition is always challenging and rewarding time spent.

Szasz's elegant analysis transports the reader into the reality of the subject matter. Szasz is the sentinel of liberty for the untold millions who've had their human right to define themselves, their lives, and their problems ripped away by runaway psychiatric ideology. Szasz's morally graceful, consistent, and over half-century long exposition of psychiatry's destructive and violent enmeshment with the state is a gift to the world.

Leonard Frank has witnessed Szasz's body of work unfold over these past decades and has produced a fine selection in this new e-book, and he worked with input from Szasz. With so many hundreds of thousands of words of published work to choose from, buying and reading this e-book is a great starting point for any newcomer to Szasz's ideas, but those already familiar will find much to take away with every fresh read.

Some standout quotations from this book are:

"For more than three centuries, experts on the mind -- mad doctors, alienists, psychiatrists, and psychologists -- have clung to the idea of mental illness like a drowning man clings to a raft. It is understandable that they do so. As the identity and prestige of the priest depend on the existence of God, so the identity and prestige of the psychiatrist and clinical psychologist depend on on the existence of mental illness. It does not matter how God or mental illness is defined. What matters is that their existence or reality be accepted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philosopher of LIberty September 26, 2011
I have found a few great teachers in my 60 years; two of them join forces in The Szasz Quotationary. Leonard Roy Frank is my best personal teacher about how to use language with clear meaning, especially in regard to my chosen profession as a psychologist. He has also developed a unique niche as editor of collections of quotations, the most ambitious being the Random House Webster's Quotationary, one of the best reference books on the market. Now he has published a collection from the great philosopher of liberty, Thomas Szasz, and it is a jewel.

Thomas Szasz is one of the world's clearest thinkers, and an absolute master of the aphorism. Leonard studied Szasz' work for about half a century, and then worked hard and steady for a couple of years to give us The Szasz Quotationary. If you desire the highest level of intellectual stimulation, I think it is one of the best instigators you can find. And if you like to kind of shake your head as you get bumped into an unsettling, fresh way of looking at something, you will love it. I opened it up just now and got two in two minutes from the parenting section alone. Wow!
