Book Description

A digital original short story about young lovers at separate colleges, exploring the early years of the central relationship in Elin Hilderbrand's forthcoming novel, The Matchmaker.

Clendenin Hughes first kissed Dabney Kimball during a Nantucket snowstorm freshman year of high school. Ever since that moment - God, the rush, the chemistry! - Dabney has known that she and Clen are an unsplittable unit - essentially the same person in two different bodies.

Of course, with Dabney now at Harvard and Clen at Yale, those bodies are 140 miles apart. And traveling is a serious challenge for Dabney, for reasons she'd prefer not to discuss, reasons having to do with her mother (or lack thereof). But with the big Harvard-Yale game coming up, Dabney is determined to make the trek to New Haven to see Clen. She's even borrowed a sexy black outfit from a classmate down the hall.

But when she arrives at the tailgate to see sparks flying between Clen and Jocelyn, a girl with dark blue eyes and luscious black hair, Dabney fears the collapse of a bond she has never questioned before, a bond so important that she'll be lost without it. A stirring portrait of young love at a crossroads, THE TAILGATE introduces two irresistible characters and invites us into a world we don't want to leave. To learn the fates of Dabney and Clen, read Elin Hilderbrand's forthcoming novel, The Matchmaker.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Short Story-- Waste of money. May 6, 2014

I love Elin Hilderband books. This short story took about 20 mintutes to read and had no resolution. I understand that this is a precursor to the novel coming out next month, but there was absolutely no resolution to the story. It was if this should be the prologue to the novel.

Suffering from a form of agoraphobia, Harvard coed and amateur matchmaker Dabney Kimball only leaves campus to return to her home on Nantuckett Island. She finally agrees to visit her high school sweetheart Clen Hughes at Yale for the annual Harvard/Yale football game. Though he's been bugging her since freshman year to visit, Dabney senses a reluctance. Will she have the courage to go to Yale and is her boyfriend hiding a secret?
THE TAILGATE is more a prequel to Elin Hilderbrand's upcoming summer release THE MATCHMAKER. Last week Hilderbrand released the first give chapters of her novel, which raised my expectations for THE TAILGATE. I loved the character if Dabney, who showed depth even in this short story. Hilderbrand's writing was impeccable as always, but there was something missing from TAILGATE. It didn't feel like a stand alone story. At $1.99 it felt overpriced for how short and incomplete the ending.
Heather Gudenkauf's LITTLE LIES, a precursor to her summer release did a much better job telling a stand alone story, introducing the protagonist.
Still, I enjoyed the story and characters in THE TAILGATE enough to recommend.

The Tailgate by Elin Hildenbrand
Love this author and realized I had not read this one. Daphne and Clen were high school sweethearts.
Now that they are at college they don't get to see each other so often. She often catches the ferry on Friday nights to return to the island for the weekend when Clen wanted to spend time with her.
Last year he had shown up with his friends at her college, for the football game. This year she hopes to surprise him by showing up at his college, for the game.
She realizes he's changed so much as he wrestles with the guys on the yard and isn't shaving.
She is able to take on her fear head on by going to the game, with her friend....and now he's got plans to return to his journalist job after the game and not go on their dinner date.
Game is going well til others come between them and Daphne wonders about Clen and his new friends....til she discovers what's going on and she knows she has a choice to make: stay or go.
This is the pre story to The Matchmaker by the same author where their story continues... Love the aura she sees around others who are dating=-she can pair them up fr a lifetime...
Excerpt of The Matchmaker is included.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This story is very short and so will this review be. It is exactly what it is meant to be - a sneak peak into The Matchmaker to tempt you into reading the book.

This introduction will make you want to know more about Clen and Dabney. If you have already read The Matchmaker ( which I did - review June 9th ) this will be an interesting look at where it all began.

As usual Elin Hilderbrand, caught my attention and left me wanting more!

I loved the writing and the crux of this story -- right up to the very end. As much as I love Elin Hilderbrand, the author, I felt she just left me hanging; and I felt cheated out of knowing how the two main characters resolved the block in the road and how their relationship weathered that storm. While 'The Matchmaker,' the 'sequel' to this story, if you will, centers around the relationship between these characters, I thought this story was supposed to tell me about their very foundation.

4.0 out of 5 stars I thought this was a great addition to The Matchmaker September 12, 2014

As a huge Elin Hilderbrand fan, I thought this was a great addition to The Matchmaker. It provided interesting background to the story. I'm glad I read The Matchmaker first, as this short story did change my point of view just a bit on one of the main characters. This short story could be read alone, but after reading The Matchmaker it was much more meaningful.

I enjoyed this short story but it left me wanting to read more. I wanted to see how the friendships and relationships in the story panned out. Also, there seemed to be so much more to learn about Dabney. Like all of Elin Hildebrands books, I was sucked in and didn't put it down.

These short stories of hers always seem to have such abrupt endings. I do love her style, but wish she wouldn't shut the door so quickly.
