Biography

As they release their sixth studio album, The Take Off and Landing of Everything, it is fair to say that elbow are in a rare position within the music world. Few bands can lay claim to a career that encompasses over twenty years. Even fewer can make that claim without changes to personnel, and, yet, elbow in 2014 are the same as elbow in 1992: Guy Garvey on vocals, Mark Potter on guitar, Pete ... Editorial Reviews

The Take Off and Landing of Everything was recorded at the band s facility at Blueprint Studios in Salford with additional sessions at Peter Gabriel s Real World Studios in Wiltshire during 2013. As with their multi-platinum fourth album, The Seldom Seen Kid and platinum follow-up build a rocket boys!, the album was produced by Craig Potter.

Elbow is one of my favorite bands. I've been listening to their music for a few years. I first started listening to them through hearing the critically acclaimed and anthem driven The Seldom Seen Kid. This is still one of my favorite albums! I decided to look through their past music and I loved what I found! Each album has a unique craft and complexity as well as being different from one another. Their wonderful musical arrangements can be ominous, dark, elusive and uplifting. Each album explores new territory and experiments with sounds. The band is not afraid to try new things. And that's what I love about them. They never repeat themselves. What makes Elbow work is their singer, Guy Garvey. He is such a down to earth and sincere man through watching his interviews, listening to his radio show and listening to his deep, introspective lyrics. His words are full of rich imagery and convey any kind of emotion. His lyrics give you a look into his perspective and how he views the world. It's such a pleasure to hear him croon and sing of love, friendship and just simply, life! Guy's voice and Elbow's music cannot be found anywhere else but in Elbow! So many groups sound so similar or sound like they're following a trend. But not Elbow. Sure, they pulled from variety of influences. However, Elbow's music is their own.

After the release of The Seldom Seen Kid, Elbow released their then highly anticipated album, Build a Rocket Boys! I must admit, though it was a lovely album, it did not meet my expectations. I thought Elbow would continue and develop on what they did with Seldom Seen Kid. So I was disappointed not to hear the dark musical landscape I heard before. However, over time I realized that Elbow has become much more comfortable in their skins.

At long last the latest Elbow album has arrived and, it is a masterwork. More cohesive than anything they have done before, there is so much stirring beauty, sadness, loss, separation and joy in this work. I love albums that you take a while to warm up to but when it hits, it gets into the blood stream. "The Take Off and Landing of Everything" is one of those albums. Like all of Elbow's albums, the music doesn't knock you as being overly complicated and there are no solos by any of the instrumentalists. Instead, the music simmers, shines and quietly explodes at times. Guy's lyrics and beautiful voice are only getting stronger. He has found his sea legs! Those who know how wonderful and joyous Elbow is live can just imagine what "New York Morning", "This Blue World" and "My Sad Captains" are going to sound like, with the crowding singing at the top of their lungs and knocking the roof off each venue.

I have read some reviews that dismiss this album as slow and plodding. Boy are they wrong. This is not music for a dance hall. It is music that stirs the soul, that celebrates mornings, whiskey and tenderness. One song that has stuck a chord is the closer "The Blanket of the Night, a stunningly beautiful hymn to the cost of mistakes we make.

If you are new to Elbow, let this one play for a while, you will not be disappointed. Best new music of 2014 and it will be hard to top. Bravo!

Even if you don't listen to the whole album, at least check out "My Sad Captains". The song just tugs at my soul. Seldom there are songs that leave such a strong impression for me, and I can tell you that this song will be in my future '2014' nostalgia mix.

I'll be honest: after my first listening--heck, after the first few--I was lukewarm on the latest album from one of my Top 5 favorite bands. I'd even go so far as to say disappointed. Why? Coming hot on the heels of Live from Jodrell Bank (a MUST-OWN album for any Elbow fan, and one of the best live albums I own) I was hoping for a few 'crunchy' tunes. Tunes along the lines of Station Approach, Leaders of the Free World and (of course) Ground for Divorce.

So here I am MANY weeks after release giving the album five stars; how did that happen? It wasn't the cliché "it grew on me." What struck me over time: every tune on the album has real SUBSTANCE. The music, the lyrics, the mixing, the works. In a word, this is one SOLID album ... perhaps Elbow's most solid album to date.

It took a while, but everything on this album took off for me. And there is no landing in sight.

I've been an Elbow fan since the beginning. I've loved every album except Build a Rocket Boys, which was just okay for me. It felt like it was missing something. Fortunately, they found what was missing on this record. Every track is brilliant, and this might be my favorite Elbow album ever.

I have to admit I was underwhelmed at first. On second listen, I thought the first half of the album was great but the rest was weak. On the third listen, this really clicked and I appreciated the intense beauty of every note and every song. An incredible album that is sure to be one of the finest records of the year!

Mature, forward-looking,insightful. Don't expect a crescendo; built for endurance. Sit back, put your headphones on, close your eyes, and listen twice from start to finish. Focus deeply into the sound. That's pretty much it.
