Several plots were intricately woven together in this story.

My wife and I like to read books to each other while one of us does the chores around the house. It was my turn to choose the book and we'd heard good things about this one, so we snagged a copy. We found the book extremely diverting (we've been reading before bed, for dates, and sometimes instead of doing the chores...) My wife is normally not into action or fantasy, but surprisingly this book piqued her interest and she's been as prompt about reading it as I have been.

The characters are well-developed and the world is rich-- the Asian setting is a welcome relief from the cliche medieval setting so prevalent these days. The authors put their obvious experience in both martial arts and Asian culture to good use in spinning a tale with many twists and turns.

One final thing I've really enjoyed about this book is the writing style, which jumps between first-person accounts from each character's perspective. As a result, you see the motivations and the human side in both the villains and the heroes, leaving you uncertain about who the real heroes are until the last few chapters.

Shogun meets fantasy. Any fan of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would love this read. Getting lost in the fight sequences was the biggest surprise of this book. Everybody expects heroes and characters we can all cheer for and this book has several. However the villains have some ambiguity and at times I found myself cheering for them as well. It has its dark, twisted moments that kept me guessing and wondering which side to cheer against. Villains seemed justified in their actions as if I could have evolved into any of them. It became the quintessential page turner for me and I enjoy that about a book. When I find odd moments to read something it becomes quite enjoyable. I even made my wife drive places in order to get time to read it. It is a little slow in the beginning but it made sense at the end of the book and did not detract from the experience. I have got my Samurai sword at the ready to delve into the next installment (hope there is one). Until then I will have to watch foreign Kung-Fu films and some Akira Kurosawa on Netflix to get anywhere near the experience I had with this book.

This was a great story. It took me about 2 chapters to get into the setting and the characters because the world the authors weave is so detailed and intricate. After that, the story just kept getting better. The characters were believable. Even though you love the good guys and hate the bad guys, you can see human motives and weakness in each. I am anxiously waiting for the sequel to come out so I can continue the experience through the Seventh Empire.

I really enjoyed this book. The world that it takes place in is unique and refreshing. I enjoyed the characters and of course all of the twists and turns. I am planning on giving copies of this book to my extended family for Christmas.
