After over fifty years this little western still holds up very well. Director Elmo Williams put together a great cast with Bridges, Cobb, Windsor and the wonderfully hateful Luther Adler, in a tale of gold, Indians, and rugged action. The final scene, with Bridges fending off Indians as he claws his way through the rocks is classic. If you liked "High Noon" "Treasure of Sierra Madre" or "Stagecoach" this one is for you!

VCI Entertainment presents "The Tall Texan" (1953) (Dolby digitally remastered)...an Lippert Pictures production featuring Lloyd Bridges, Lee J. Under director Elmo Williams, producer Robert L. Lippert Jr, screenplay by Samuel Roeca, additional dialogue by Elizabeth Reinhardt, music composed by Bert Shefter, stunts by Calvin Spencer (stunt double for Lloyd Bridges)...the cast include Lloyd Bridges (Ben Trask), Lee J. The film originally had a very weak storyline and the stars led by Marie Windsor pushed for screenwriter Elizabeth Reinhardt to be brought in to work on the story. The director complained that they didn't have the budget and that the Executive producer would have to pay her. Well it worked out and The Tall Texan turned into a taunt little western buoyed by the good talent of Lloyd Bridges, Lee J. Cobb, Marie Windsor and Luther Adler. While the film was beset by problems from union problems, water problems, budget problems and a write as you worked script it turned into a pretty decent little change of pace western better than most B westerns of the times. Survivors of a stagecoach attack by one tribe of Indians find a gold field. Another tribe takes their weapons and says they will allow them to pan for the gold as long as they didn't go past a stand of lances into their sacred burial grounds. With the actual gold strike in the middle of the burial grounds and Luther Adler, doing one of his evil low life roles that he handled so well, you can guess what happens. Bridges does a good role of a wrongly convicted criminal on his way to prison on the stage and Cobb is a confident ex-sea captain who the others respect. Windsor plays the female along who falls for one and still likes the other.

We have a monthly event in our town called "The Art Walk", and Elmo Williams is a frequent contributor to the entertainment. On November 10, 2007, Elmo told the story of the difficulties encountered in making this film with a budget of only $104,000 and about some of the personalities involved with the production. You may or may not like this film, but it will be worthwhile seeing what a great filmmaker can do with a fraction of the money available to some of his contemporaries.
