About the Author

Launched in 1993, Taste of Home is the most popular recipe magazine in the world, with nearly 4 million paid subscribers. The delectable, practical recipes-more than 75 in each issue-are family favorites contributed by Taste of Home readers. The dishes, all beautifully photographed, capture special flavors of the season and are made with ingredients that home cooks are likely to have on hand or can readily find at a local supermarket. New recipe contests are announced every issue, and readers are encouraged to send their best recipes for Taste of Home's regular features, like "A Complete Meal in a Matter of Minutes," "Cooking for One or Two," "My Mom's Best Meal," "Super Snacks & Appetizers," and "Just Desserts." The magazine's unique staff of field editors is made up of more than 1,000 experienced home cooks located in each state and Canadian province, who regularly share recipes, well-liked menus and kitchen tips. Taste of Home is published six times a year and has three sister magazines, Simple & Delicious, Cooking for 2, and Healthy Cooking.

I bought this as a gift for a bachelor friend that is a little wary about cooking actual meals. I've made some dishes from it and have made my own recipes based off some of the included recipes. I think it does a great job of keeping the ingredient list to easily found grocery items. The tags separating the sections is helpful to getting to what sort of meal you want. The ingredient index is also really helpful for finding a recipe that will use up that leftover ground turkey, or whatever else you have sitting in your fridge. My bachelor friend is still a bit intimidated by the recipes, always saying he doesn't have all the ingredients, and that he doesn't have awesome cooking skills, but I'm sure I'll make him come around to using it.

The downsides - like most cookbooks (maybe all) it doesn't have every single basic recipe in it. There also is not any nutritional information for the recipes.
Upsides - Handy splashguard to keep the page clean while you're cooking up a storm. Free issues of the Taste of Home magazine with the purchase (opt out of the subscription when the time comes.) Three ring bound edge lets it lay flat. Great pictures of the end product.

I bought this for myself and a friend of mine. We had just attended a "Taste of Home" event, and hoped to win one. Well, we didn't, so I came here, saw them at a price we haven't seen, and instantly bought them. The books are very informative, with inspiring stories of caring individuals or groups of people. The recipes are easy to follow and have tasty looking pictures! I would definitely recommend it as a first cookbook, or a resource for those trying to be proficient cooks!

Pros:

+ Great for everyone from the earliest of beginners to the expert gourmet chefs.

+ Recipes for alcoholic beverages for those interested

+ Meal Planning ideas

+ Need to know how to stuff, roast, carve a turkey? Its in here. Step by Step!

+ Includes a mail in card for a free one year subscription to the Taste of Home Magazine.

+ 1, 345 recipes, with an additional 345 on a bonus exclusive website (code inside the book)

+ I love to grill so the Beef and Veal, and Pork and Lamb sections are also a plus for me

+ Recipes divided into sections, Classic, Time-Saver(less effort, less cooking time, or maybe both!), Light(for the calorie watchers) and Serves 2(scaled down for the perfect amount for two people)

Cons:

+ Some recipes do not have pictures, but then again, if they all had pictures just imagine how thick this cookbook would be

I got my cookbook in the mail and opened it right up. I must say that it is the best I have ever bought. Having reviewed the cookbook, It seems to have everything a beginner would need to know, setting tables, cutting and chopping, food safety, different cutlery types and keeping them properly maintained ect... The first section in the book called "Kitchen and Basics" explains many things that a cook would need to know, in it their is a section showing pictures of and describing what the different types of kitchen knives are and what they are used for. And I love how this cookbook shows the good uses for all the herbs and spices, the vegetables and their storage.

Woot woot is the best beginning to this review. There was a time in the not too distant past that I thought nothing could replace my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook I received as a bridal gift. After much love, much use, and a fateful trip to the bookstore, I have come to the conclusion that...

I was wrong.

Because this is it. While there will always be room on my shelf for that other beloved and faithful book, this one has taken its place as my go-to cookbook.

How can I not love a book that gives me healthy choices (utilizing easy to spot icons) and great recipes that use everyday ingredients? Oh. Did I mention plastic splash guards? Why was this not invented years ago?! But, if they had been, I wouldn't have been swayed to commit cookbook adultery and purchased this one. Yes. I admit it. I'm a cookbook slut. Look. Let me explain it this way....

325 reduced calorie recipes
82 favorite recipes that are prepared four different ways - the classic, light, time-saver, and serves 2
Nutrition facts - (no more wondering if this is going to pad hubby's stomach a little more than necessary)
Over 300 cooking and preparing tips
And...
Plastic Splash Guards (I know, right?!)

My one line assessment?
Eat your heart out, momma. This baby's mine!

This is a great cookbook. The recipes are perfect for the home cook who doesn't want to have to go out and buy lots of weird ingredients, spend hours on a dish or learn complex tasks. At the same time, the recipes aren't oversimplified either - just the perfect balance. (There are some recipes that are more complex, but it's not the majority.)

The format of the book is great too - the tabbed dividers really help you find what you need, and the repositionable plastic page covers keep your pages free from messes that you know would end up there!

And perhaps the best thing - there's a card inside for a free 1-yr subscription to Taste of Home magazine - the regular cost for that is MORE than the book price!

You can't lose with this cookbook.
