This is perhaps the most enjoyable DVD classical collection I have ever viewed.

The Violin Concerto and the Concert Fantasy are key tests of the conducting skills and musician skills of the orchestra, as well as the sound quality of the recording.
Jmam
He displays all the virtuoso brilliance and vigor plus a sensitivity to the lyrical moments rarely encountered in performances of this work.

The Tchaikovsky Cycle was recorded in 1991, two years prior to Arthaus' marvelous Dvorak Cycle, at the Frankfurt Alte Oper. The sound is still more than fair for today's standards, the video a bit dated and uneven, but quite adequate. The recordings were cut from clips shot both at live performances and dress rehearsals, a common practice. Let it be said beforehand that Vladimir Fedoseyev is arguably the most sensitive, versatile and powerful advocate of Tchaikovsky's music. His great Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (renamed the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra in 1993 after the breakup of the USSR) plays very well throughout the 630 minutes recorded here. The only section I find wanting are the horns: they can sound raucous or strained at times. Soloists Mikhail Pletnev, Antonio Meneses and Viktor Tretyakov are outstanding. It is a shame that those concerts without the most popular works were poorly attended, even more surprising that the Cycle did not receive much resonance with critics and reviewers. This is a milestone collection which will give you many hours of listening and viewing pleasure and a lot of new insights into the composer's genius -- the high points and some flawed and tormented efforts. As the supply already appears to dwindle, you might want to get this set while you can. I'll briefly review the individual DVDs (see there), but here are some general observations upon re-visiting a major portion of Tchaikovsky's compositions as performed by Fedoseyev and his collaborators. First, I wish that "Manfred" had been included: a fascinating work musically superior to the early symphonies. Second, Tchaikovsky was no Beethoven or Mahler, and the range between the soaring inspiration of his masterworks and some lesser pieces is extremely wide.Read more ›

This series of concerts in Frankfurt 20 years ago is a fitting tribute to one of the world's greatest composers. The Russian conductor and orchestra provide deeply committed, authentic versions of the six symphonies, several concertos, the 1812, extracts from Swan Lake and Eugene Onegin, and other Tchaikovsky favourites. Although I know most of the compositions in my sleep, this DVD set brought them all to life again. This is perhaps the most enjoyable DVD classical collection I have ever viewed. I thoroughly recommend it. The sound and vision are also of a high standard.

This DVD set is an excellent value and presents excellent performances of all of the Tchaikovsky works presented. Tchaikovsky's music kicks you in the shins with its ornate pleading for a more progressive world. The interpretations and conducting are all first rate, and the musicians all excellent performers. The pianist Pletnev performs excellently and gives a fine performance of the Concert Fantasia, played on a perfectly tuned Steinway the sound of which is excellently recorded and mastered. There is always a balanced give and take or question and answer between the orchestra and the soloists, where applicable. The Violin Concerto is also an excellent interpretation with the violin soloist Tretyakov playing with expert technique and playing very fast but with the required nuanced tone. The Violin Concerto and the Concert Fantasy are key tests of the conducting skills and musician skills of the orchestra, as well as the sound quality of the recording. Both come through with flying colors. The symphonies are essentially perfectly interpreted. The creativity and math skills of Russians show in their musical skills, especially when interpreting the music of one of their own. The conductor Fedoseyev knows his interpretive craft and gave Tchaikovsky a faithful hearing. The video quality is slightly low resolution, but the audio quality is excellent. A great overview of the non-linear conceptual sprawl and ornate chordal timbres that is Tchaikovsky's music.

This, as reviewed by others, is indeed a good buy so I won't go into details about the music. It isn't the very best but it is one heck of a good buy. The performance is very good but the quality of the discs is not top notch and the menu is maddening. The disc, when first inserted into the player, goes immediately into the music and must be manipulated to choose titles, etc. If you want to begin at any other point it takes some doing but this admittedly amounts to a bit of nit picking. I have listened to the whole cycle but even so, it is still not easy to play these discs in the way I would like it to be done, using a menu that makes sense. But aside from being a bit cumbersome with the menus I am very pleased with the purchase.
