Editorial Reviews

The Tea Party's 1993 debut, Splendor Solis, may not be marked by the Eastern influences that would characterize later releases, but it's no less ambitious. Combining a plethora of styles and sounds, from folk and rock to blues, into one heady--and heavy--sound, the Tea Party don't so much write songs as craft mini-epics to showcase their sprawling repertoire of global instruments. Add vocalist-guitarist Jeff Martin's rumbling baritone and somewhat hippy-dippy lyrics, and Splendor Solis is at once a throwback to the '60s and a tip-off to the trio's future as one of Canada's most adventurous rock bands. --Adem Tepedelen

WOW!!! This one is off the scale, folks! This is easily one of the top 5 greatest rock albums of all time! It may even be #1! At times dark and somber, at other times, bright and hopeful, the Jim-Morrison-like lyrics and spellbinding music combine to weave a psychedelic, hypnotic web comprised of intricate melodic passages interwoven with some of the most powerful, majestic hard rock ever recorded. Even the Halloweenish artwork helps draw you in. From the first song to the last, the listener enters an enchanting world of mystical beauty, sun-drenched hazy summer days, flowery gardens, and whatever other images enter your mind as you listen. And the quality of the musicianship is stunning - far superior to all the mediocre, dull, nondescipt sludge being passed off as "music" these days. Even the hard rock passages have a distinctive, intricate, melodic style and sound that is rare in hard rock. Poetic, mystical, and moody, the album combines Eastern and Doors/Led Zeppelin influences, but goes far beyond anything Led Zeppelin or the Doors have done. It takes the influences of the past and transforms them into new stratospheric realms which are hard to describe in words. If you are a fan of the psychedelic sound emanating from the late 60s and early 70s and appreciate quality musicianship, great lyrics, and music which brings images and visions of other times and places to mind, you can't miss with this album.

The Tea Party makes use of over 200 instruments in their albums. Their early records (SPLENDOR SOLIS, Edges Of Twighlight) are more mellow and artistic, compared to the more digital and rough sound of Transmission. The deep throat sound of the band gives them an edge, while their Canadian heritage tops it all off. Over all a must buy to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing debut! April 22, 2008

One of the finest rock albums ever made, right up there with Zeppelin. Jeff Martin is the next Jimmy Page with an amazing voice to boot. Great song selection, very technical and precise unpparalled guitar work, great vocals and just an overall amazing album!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true splendor it is! January 24, 2000

As a true fan of The Tea Party, I must say that perhaps my overall comments of this true masterpiece will be somewhat bias, however The Tea Party deserve all the recognition in the world. Just a brief history, I started listening to the Tea Party 5 years ago, and to this day their CD's rest, dust free on top of my pile of paled albums. Splendor Solis is truly their best album to date (including Triptych). Splendor touches the core of what true music is supoosed to be like, Martin weilding his haunting powers of using exotic instruments as well as his exotic voice to hypnotize the listener and never let go. When listening to Splendor Solis one finds oneself in another realm in another time; a time maintained by beauty and truth, unattainable by any other artists to this day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Zeppelin-esque blues rock September 15, 1998

The Tea Party's major label debut is an example of blues rock at its best. Lead guitarist Jeff Martin shows his talent on songs like Sun Going Down, a classic blues rock song, The River, a hard rocking masterpiece, and Raven Skies, a middle eastern rock song. Also, Winter Solstice is a beautiful acoustic song that you can put on repeat and enjoy for hours. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who likes Led Zeppelin, and also for anyone who enjoyed the Tea Party's two later albums. You can really see the evolution from album to album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of history May 10, 2014

It is truly gratifying to read these comments. Splendor Solis was recorded at White Crow Audio in Burlington, Vermont. I owned the studio. We were on a roll during that period (1990-1993), recording for Phish, Dinosaur Jr. and Alice Cooper, among others. Tea Party was a perfect match for White Crow. The studio was one of last great analog recording studios in the Northeast U.S. The band's organic sound took full advantage of it.

Jeff Martin was a creative powerhouse. From his extra rich vocals to his musicianship—which included playing his guitar with a violin bow—he seemed born for this role. His musical influences were all ones that I grew up with, so this was definitely my "cup of tea." Now, many years later, to discover that this album is the best selling album we ever recorded is just too sweet.
