Product Description

The Steeping Mug is a 16 oz handcrafted ceramic vessel for brewing loose leaf teas. This 3-piece design (mug, infuser, and lid / saucer) allows you to steep loose teas as easy as tea bags. The large volume infuser allows ample room for tea to unfurl and release its flavor and aroma into the brew. The mug's handle is especially useful when drinking teas steeped at high temperatures. A perfect tea-for-one selection for the home or office.

The second thing is the lid, and it's a pretty bad flaw.

I love the lid and the fact the lid flips over to hold the infuser.

This product is great for steeping tea bags or loose tea.

REVIEW UPDATE: on the second cup of tea the glass split in half right down the side. I would now have to rate this junk. It is going back to Bed, Bath and Beyond.

I had a tea mug we bought in Chinatown in Chicago many years ago and the lid broke. It took a long time to find a replacement. I like to have a lid on my mug so the tea or coffee doesn't get cold so darn fast, and this does the trick. I was less interested in the diffuser as I usually make a pot or use bags.

There is two things that annoy me about this mug.

The price for one, but they are so hard to find I coughed it up. Almost [...] bucks for a mug made in China is ridiculous, but they got you. I bought mine at Bed Bath and Beyond retail store, not online, for 14.99, but they were out of stock and I had to pay S/H, so it was a wash compared to Amazon (with free shipping).

The second thing is the lid, and it's a pretty bad flaw. In the picture it looks like a functioning handle on the lid, it is not. The handle grasp is narrow with no lip. Good luck trying to pick the lid up by this handle, it just slips out of your hands. You have to use the sides of the lid. When the lid is hot from tea be careful, or you will be dropping this lid and buying another mug. Use a potholder or have nimble fingers.

I like the fact that the ceramic infuser, lid and mug can be stored together to free up some space and that all three pieces match BUT tiny pieces of my loose leaf tea gets stuck in the infuser's holes every time I use it.

Since the holes on the infuser are small, it's pretty difficult to get the particles out just by washing/rinsing out the item. I sometimes poke out the stuck tea leaves with the metal point of a really small-gauge (.3mm) mechanical pencil (the only thing I have around the office that fits the holes) but since I like my tea every morning, I usually end up just leaving the particles in there and refilling the mug with more tea leaves + yesterday's tea pieces stuck in the infuser. (I make sure to sanitize the mug and infuser by scalding the pieces with steaming hot water.)

I don't regret purchasing this product. I just wish there were an easier way to really clean everything.

This was a gift for my sister - she called and told me that when she put the hot water in the cup the insert broke (This was her first time using it). Tried to get a exchange but Amazon says no returns. This was not a cheap cup I paid $20 for this cup. Usually Amazon is pretty good about returns and/or refunds don't know why this item is different. I wonder what would of happened if the cup was broken when it was delivered?

The above reviews seem to cover it. I'll just note a few points.

The comments about the awkward handle, unfortunately, are true. The handle is too thin and thus puts pressure on your fingers; and, because the handle is vertical and placed well away from the body, which slopes inward, the handle levers the weight of the heavy cup against your hand rather than balancing it. A minor point, but it mars the design of the cup and inserts, which is otherwise nice.

My set arrived very well packaged, and unbroken. I don't know if they've changed the packaging after complaints about breakage, but the problem seems taken care of: the cup is held in a heavy styrofoam shell, and the inserts are wrapped in padding. Seemed very secure to me.

The cup is nicely big, but a lot of the volume is taken up by the strainer insert - if you are using the strainer, the cup will be about one-quarter empty after you remove it. Again not a big deal - that's just the way it works. The cup is big enough that you still get a good amount of tea before refilling.

The holes in the strainer are small enough to strain out leaf tea very effectively - very little debris in the cup. Ground or crushed tea would not work well. I don't know about coffee, but it would have to be relatively coarse-ground. The holes do seem to be just large enough to catch the little stems on loose leaf tea, making it hard to clean, which is annoying but not a big problem.

The use of the lid to hold the wet strainer after you remove it is clever and effective, but it means you then can't put the lid on the cup to keep it warm; the ceramic does seem to hold the heat pretty well, though.

I have tried the french press travel mugs for tea, a tea infuser ball and just tea floating around in my cup, and I find this one to be the easiest to use, and I get lots of compliments on it. I have one for work and one for home. I especially like the lid that can be used as a saucer for the infuser insert. The second cup I ordered arrived badly broken---like in a million pieces--was packed in a box with other grocery items with free super saver shipping. Keep in mind that the mug is a nonreturnable grocery item, so getting a replacement was more difficult than expected. Amazon ended up refunding my purchase price, and I ordered a new one. Both mugs I have shipped individually arrived without delay/fracture. One of our local tea shops serves your cup of tea in this mug.
