5.0 out of 5 stars this ain't the Boys & Girls Club September 12, 2011

Titans together!! There was a time in the early '80s when THE NEW TEEN TITANS were vying with the X-MEN in popularity and in sales. As much as I dug Marvel's merry mutants I, frankly, preferred the Titans over them. And it's all to do with the characters and how they were so well written and with the spectacular artwork. I don't think Marv Wolfman and George Pérez had an inkling as to how insanely hot their revival of the Teen Titans was going to be. In Wolfman's intro for this trade, he mentions that Pérez had assumed that his stint would only be temporary because he didn't think the series would last beyond six issues (in that era, DC titles were notorious for their ephemeral nature). Except that George and Marv happened to hit lightning in a bottle. The first five years or so of THE NEW TEEN TITANS' existence, their issues weren't just read, they were devoured.

The unbeatable Deathstroke the Terminator. The infernal Trigon the Terrible. The formidable Fearsome Five. The first few issues alone introduced these badass foes. Marv Wolfman, in my opinion, turned out his best work with the Titans. And you know you're on to something when even the bad guys come off as three-dimensional (it made a star out of Deathstroke). Trigon is an epic, epic villain, and I remember the ominous chills that charged thru me whenever he deigned to darken our dimension with his presence. Although it's unfortunate that the first time we set eyes on him, he's being drawn by Curt Swan (no offense to Curt Swan, but his Silver Age style doesn't come close to depicting the majesty and sheer bladder-loosening menace of Trigon). Apocalyptic demonic incursions. Sweeping space opera. And traditional supervillain beatdowns. The Titans did it all.

But no matter how outrageous their exploits, that still wouldn't have been enough if you didn't give an ef about the characters. And that's where Wolfman's writing just surged. Wolfman delivered thrills... and pathos. He was smart to advance the kids to young adulthood, to give them lives that didn't revolve around their mentors. He made us care about Robin, Kory, Donna, Vic, Gar, Wally, and Raven, all of whom were fleshed out brilliantly and who played off each other so organically. I was drawn to their damaged psyches, their petty squabbles, their clear and sometimes mutual animosity. And yet beneath all the dysfunction, Wolfman was able to instill a wonderful sense of family. It made for a crackling good team dynamics; the synergy was palpable. You felt that when their battle cry "Titans together!" rang out, it wasn't just to stimulate adrenaline or to cow them wrong-doers, it was also a reaffirmation of their close-knit bond. Okay, then, call me sappy.

Gonna ramble some more. Another thing that was so awesome about this series was that while their most sensational adventures were truly epic ("the Terror of Trigon," "The Judas Contract," etc.) it's the quiet, more intimate stories - the ones that didn't feature any big bad - that really hit those emotional buttons. I was simply enthralled with "Who Is Donna Troy?" when it first came out, the plot of which has Donna hiring her best friend, Robin, to investigate her murky past, find out where she came from. Wolfman's writing has never been more exceptional than in that teary little tale, plus we saw Robin's detecting skills at work. "We Are Gathered Here Today..." is memorable for not only Donna and Terry's wedding but for the total absence of bad guys showing up to ruin it. "A Day in the Lives..." - which is reprinted here (issue #8) - introduced a landmark narrative device which other writers would quickly pick up on: that of the story dedicated entirely to our characters' personal lives.

Besides the first showdown with Trigon, this omnibus also presents the two-parter (#11-12) in which the female Teen Titans get mixed up with the Gods and Titans of Greek mythology, as well as the thrilling three-issue arc (#13-15) in which the Teen Titans avenge the murder of Changeling's old team, the Doom Patrol. And, for all you hopeless romantics, this omnibus also revisits the first sparks between Robin and Starfire, back when our fierce Princess Koriand'r wasn't yet drawn as towering over Mr. Grayson. It also reacquaints us with Terry Long, Donna's beau and one of my all-time favorite non-powered supporting characters.

So, yes, THE NEW TEEN TITANS OMNIBUS is the boss! Printed on high quality paper and running at around 670 pages, this trade collects the Titan's free insert story from DC COMICS PRESENTS #26, THE NEW TEEN TITANS #1-20, the short story "Reunion!" - which has Speedy and Aqualad temporarily returning to the fold - from BEST OF DC (Digest) #18, and the four issues of the TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS mini-series. It also offers an informative foreword by Marv Wolfman (from 1998) as well as George Pérez's individual pin-ups of the Titans. That's the only downside to this omnibus, that there isn't more bonus stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than advertised!!! September 8, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The description on this page undervalues this book. Its not the first 16 issues, its the first 20 + the four issue origin miniseries + the "preview" story that ran before the series began. One of the best comic book runs ever, its nice to have something be better than advertised for once. A solid buy.

I love that this series is finally being put in collections like this! If you love this era of the Titan's, this book is a must buy! I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is more than just the first 16 issues of the New Teen Titans. DC Comics Presents #26, Best of DC (Blue Ribbon Digest) #18, and the four issue mini series Tales of the New Teen Titans are in it as well. It looks like the makers of this book really want to please the fans of the this team. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

George Perez started drawing at the age of five and hasn't stopped since. Born on June 9, 1954, Pérez started his professional comics career as an assistant to Rich Buckler in 1973. After establishing himself as a penciller at Marvel Comics, Pérez first came to DC in... Read more

Where is the Geoff Johns Omnibus???
It looks like it had been prematurely listed and is in fact not coming out anytime this year. My order for it was cancelled and DC's official list of upcoming products does not contain it. The same thing appears to have happened with the new printing of the DC/Marvel crossover book.
