West Papua is a Stone Age land, the ideal destination for an adventure tourist in search of lost tribes. Or so we learn from popular depictions of the region. Fortunately, Charlie Farhadian has provided the perfect rejoinder to this stereotype: a beautiful and gripping collection in which West Papuan men and women from different regions and backgrounds describe how they became involved in the current movement for self-determination. Their stories are articulate and sophisticated, sometimes humorous, always honest, and often moving. For outsiders who want to know more about the lives and hopes of those who dwell in this contested corner of Indonesia, The Testimony Project is a good place to begin.

This is the best information I have read up to now about the situation in West-Papua. The book gives stories of the lives of twelve leading Papuans in their own words. It is often a story of killings, intimidation and outright racism by the Indonesian army and police. There is so much courage with these people to continue their struggle for just the right to exist and the right to a cultural and religious identity. The book is compulsory reading for all who are interested in this courageous and largely ignored struggle for freedom and independence by the Papuans of West-Papua.

This book is but a drop in the ocean. The 'civilised' world needs to understand how their governments (principally UK, US and Australia) have complied in the subjucation the native people of Papua, stealing their land and raping them of their natural resources. I urge anyone with a modicom of consciounce to buy this book and spread the word. Without public condemnation in these countries, states will continue to take the pragmatic choice of siding with the military dictatorship of Indonesia at the cost of yet more lives of melanesian people.

The straightforward and accessible prose used by Farhadian stands as an example to all anthropologists who strive to reach beyond restricted academic audiences. This collection of stories from courageous people is a must-have for any Southeast Asia or Melanesian library collections. It will also surely prove to be a useful teaching resource for courses on human rights, Christianity, and ethnohistory.
