Editorial Reviews

This is the latest in our series of jazz releases from the archive of the Ackerman collection comprising previously unreleased recordings, mainly of 'live' material. This features Woody Herman's highly regarded line-up from the mid-'50s, the Third Herd, recorded in Portland Oregon in late 1952.

Just wanted to provide another opinion/experience for this CD. The reviewer who experienced lots of noise when playing these CDs probably needed to try them in another CD player. These are CD-R discs and as such not all playback decks play those very well. I had a similar problem with an Earl Hines set put out by this same record label. On my portable boombox, there was a lot of clicks and pops in the music, but when I played the discs in the CD player in my home stereo system, they sounded fine. I played these Herman discs on that same player and they too sounded fine.

The music itself is good. Nothing really exceptional for any one who has heard a lot of Woody Herman material from this era already. The tracks with Dinah Washington are certainly enjoyable.

I returned it. What more can I say ? At times there are noises on this disc that I have never heard on any recording. It kinda reminded me of the recording on the soundtrack of "Burn Witch, Burn"
