About the Author

Joko Budiono lives and teaches art in San Francisco. Born in Indonesia, he grew up fascinated by cartoons and developed a keen appreciation for visual art. After studying at the Academy of Art University, Joko collaborated with Leandro Ng and Thomas Denmark to write and illustrate an artist's manual in applying and mastering the principles of perspective, Creative Layout: Perspective for Artists (out of print). Joko's follow-up book, The Thousandth Thumbnail, continues his exploration of concept development and composition. These days, Joko enjoys teaching and watching his students' abilities grow, while also preparing illustrations for his next book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who works in illustration, comics, film, design, just about anyone with an interest in layout and composition. It's also very effective at communicating Joko's thumb-nailing philosophy non-verbally, so I suggest it to anyone of any language.

I came across this book by accident on google while looking up something else and immediately became obsessed with owning it, after a bit of research I was pleased I could purchase it what seems to be directly from the artist/publisher.

I've shown this book to most of my designer friends and keep it handy for times I hit a brick wall while thumbnailing. I feel my own work has gotten a lot more dynamic since playing with this method of tiny light/dark studies in the initial composition stage. Thanks Joko!

If you want detailed colorful polished work look elsewhere. But this is not what I wanted. I wanted to see behind-the-scenes of a good designer's thought process. This is exactly what it is. I would have liked to see a little bit more variations on one idea (for a finished piece) and the color illustrations weren't some of his strongest work. (And he has some VERY strong work). All in all very worth it. Thank you Joko. Best to you with Teddy-1.

Joko's book is a masterful example of process. Joko takes the reader though the steps to find that one perfect image. From the squiggly line thumbnails, through color comps, all the way to the final image. An inspiring work and a must have in any collection.
