Book Description

When faced with making an important life decision, 100% of
men and women polled would rather make a great choice than a terrible one; yet bad
decisions happen to good people every day. It doesn't have to be this way.

In THE THREE DOLLAR SCHOLAR: Awesome Advice for Acing Life's
Major Decisions and Mindless Debates, Jon Finkel applies the same humor and
logic he made popular in his GQ and Muscle & Fitness magazine columns to
essays about navigating life's milestone events and mainstream issues.

With its practical, think-it-through approach, THE THREE
DOLLAR SCHOLAR is as much a guide about how to make wise decisions in general
as it is a blueprint to making up your mind in particular on the subjects
covered.

In Part I of the book, titled Major Decisions: Avoid
Two-Year Mistakes, Four Year Disasters and Lifelong Nightmares, Finkel tackles
the seminal moments in our lives. From naming your child to naming your dog,
from choosing a college to choosing a warm state to live in, from planning a
marriage proposal to planning for a job interview, Finkel uses comedy and
common sense to examine what works, what doesn't work, and tells readers how to
avoid the most painful (and pitiful) pitfalls.

Part II, titled Mindless Debates, covers a smorgasbord of
pop culture and topical subjects, including how to deal with Global Globing
(he'll explain that), to why McDonald's should give in and sell the Mac Daddy
(he'll explain that, too), to why fit people have a hard time being funny
(other than you, Joe Piscopo), to getting to the bottom of the "Cat People v.
Dog People" debate. Along the way you'll learn how Chubby Checker got his name,
how absurd the energy drink war is, and much, much more...

Nobody sets out to make an awful decision or lose a mindless
debate, but it happens all the time. For less than the cost of a single
magazine issue, readers can have THE THREE DOLLAR SCHOLAR at their side to make
sure that it doesn't happen to them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I thoroughly enjoyed the authors take on some of the topics in the news, and, in fact, his unique point-of-view and sometimes exasperation at the status quo brings to mind one of my favorites of all time, George Carlin. (Many of the essays in this book could just as easily be stand-up comedy bits.) But what I also came away with was a great blueprint for young men and women navigating their lives. With a heavy dose of humor and a unique, Seinfeldian brand of common sense, The Three Dollar Scholar could very well be an up-and-coming voice for his generation. - RoomWithAReview

It's not just a humor book; it's actually got some very good tips that can be applied to many areas of everyday life. One of the most informative chapters is the one about interviewing for a job. He offers lots of useful advice in that area. This book is definitely worth picking up. It's funny as hell, informative and, best of all, cheap. - Joe Wuebben, Senior Editor, Muscle & Fitness Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, witty... And True! February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought this would be just another funny book. It was funny, but what surprised me was that the advice the author gives is also practical and true. He says things that I have thought about but never heard anyone else actually say. This guy has a way of putting things that had me cracking up. And when I stopped laughing I realized that he had actually made a point. I recommend this to all new dads, moms, husbands, pet owners, potential college students, and writers alike. His title says it all... It cost me three bucks and I got some invaluable advice, plus I laughed my butt off. I hope he comes out with a follow up to this title. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny book, but also helpful advice November 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I worked with Jon Finkel back when he was at Muscle & Fitness and he was always our best humor writer. He's got a great "voice" as a writer. I bought this book not knowing what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's not just a humor book; it's actually got some very good tips that can be applied to many areas of everyday life. One of the most informative chapters is the one about interviewing for a job. He offers lots of useful advice in that area. Sounds like he's had a lot of job interviews!

Anyway, this book is definitely worth picking up. It's funny as hell, informative and, best of all, cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why the Kindle was invented November 14, 2011
By J-Rod
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having been a fan of Jon Finkel's much-too-shortlived "Strong Words" column in Muscle & Fitness, I was predictably thrilled to read this collection of his writing -- and all for less than half the price of ONE ISSUE of M&F. Its 20-plus chapters focus on varying topics, each of which are presented and opined upon with obvious thought and research -- everything from naming your baby, picking the right college, nailing your next job interview and even weight loss. A standout chapter was his take on global warming, titled "Global Globing." It was not only witty and humorous, but also well thought out and researched. Agree or not, it will make you think.

And having this book available on my iPad and iPhone through the Kindle app makes it the perfect read when I want to fit in a little reading when I'm on the go or have a few minutes to kill. The self-contained chapters make it easy to fit a little wit and wisdom into those moments of downtime when you'd otherwise be staring at the wall.

Do yourself a favor and load this book onto your e-reader of choice. For $3, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than most self-help books, and a hell of a lot funnier than Ann Landers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew Finkel was this funny? November 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Full disclosure: I know Jon Finkel. He's really not that interesting a guy. But his BOOK? Damn, son, funny stuff. His riffs on dog people vs cat people, baby naming, and so-cal vs so-fla are hilarious. And I got all this for $3, which is about a buck less than a frickin cupcake from Sprinkles!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! Funny and helpful! November 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved this book! It was a quick read and left me wanting more. Some of the topics Jon Finkel goes over are things I've thought about many times myself. It's like he was in my head! Hopefully this starts a series of books, because there sure are lots of topics to discuss. Bring on the Mac Daddy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative Lessons on Modern Life November 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this book to be humorous, inciteful, informative and entertaining. When I finished reading, my only disappointment was in the fact that, well, I was finished. I wanted more! The advice, anecdotes and information were for all ages, genders and political persuasions (at least those with an open mind)! Great job can't wait for Volume 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny June 19, 2012
By KJ
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is right up my alley, easy to read with short sections to keep you interested. I originally bought this as I thought this was from the famous Magic the Gathering guy, but it's just a regular Jonathan Finkel, not The Great Jon Finkel. However, this Jonathan Finkel is a great writer/comedian, so it's looks like we have a battle for J. Finkel supremacy, unless there's another Jonathan Finkel out there that does something that actually contributes to society like a doctor or philanthropist. Back to the book, great to pick up for 5 minutes to catch a quick laugh or bring with you on a plane, bus, hydrofoil or whatever your mode of commuting is to keep things lively and less boring. I've actually found myself re-reading sections when I'm facing a similar decision or dilemma. Defintiely worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! June 11, 2012
By DLT
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Incredibly entertaining and thoughtful book that included some great viewpoints and arguments on relevant subjects to any 20 or 30 something or those looking to remember those years. I recommend this to anybody I come across whenever a subject in the book is touched upon or recent reads come up. What's more, is I personally am NOT one who reads books, but I still couldn't put this down and finished it in no time. One of the very few books I have started, and more importantly finished in the last 5 or 6 years.
