About the Author

Born and raised in the beautiful Main River Valley in Germany, Stefan came to the U.S. in 1996 after attending a three-month long retreat in the Catskill Mountains. He studied psychology and creative writing at SUNY New Paltz. In his free time he likes to write poetry, shorts and screenplays, attend Karate lessons, read, go hiking and watch Lord Of The Rings. He knows this doesn’t sound like much and there is a lot more to it but he thought he’d get at least some of it into this bio. He lives with his four girls—his long time girlfriend, her two daughters, and a black lab named Sophie (together with a bunny and an ever changing number of back yard chickens)—in the Hudson Valley, New York. "It was at the age of seventeen, when I first realized that I wanted to write. It took me twenty years to actually start doing it and another ten before I wrote my first novel. Never give up."

I've made it an unofficial policy of mine to simply not review indie books that I do not like. Grandma's old adage, "If you can't say something nice. . . ." sorta stuck with me, she'd be happy to hear. "I'm glad something stuck in that girl's thick head," she'd say. However, when an author actually submits a novel for review, I feel an obligation to give it my best shot to let the author know where I feel the story and/or writing could improve and the reader know they might want to skip it. I got that tight, nervous, "oh, no, oh, no, no, no" feeling between the shoulder blades when I started The Three Feathers. Yep. I started to tense up right on the first page, already dreading writing this review. Someone poured their heart and soul into this book, took a leap of faith sending it to me for review, and here I sit judging it from the first page. I imagine Mr. Bolz is feeling that hard, cold knot in his stomach right about now reading this, so I've got to let him off the hook. Not even realizing it, I looked up a few pages later and noticed that nervous feeling I had, the dread, had melted away. I had become thoroughly immersed, enthralled, in fact, by the magical world of Joshua the rooster and hadn't even realized it. Yes, rooster. Give it a chance, people. ;)

Stefan Bolz's The Three Feathers is a delightful story about stepping out of the box, following your dreams (literally and figuratively, in Joshua's case) and finding your place, your mission. It is about the bonds of friendship and love, and making differences a strength. It reminds me on many levels of an old Chinese proverb; the language, the Zen-like lessons, the writing itself.

I thoroughly enjoyed this "good read", and completed it in one day. The author has done a wonderful job of giving us fully formed, memorable characters. There wasn't an odd note or lost thread anywhere. I am convinced that this saga has been with the author since his birth, waiting in his subconscious until he felt compelled to write it for all of us to enjoy. I look forward to the sequels.

"Extraordinary things happen when ordinary folk begin to imagine the unthinkable."
From "The Three Feathers" by Stefan Bolz

My favorite quote from the story, and a truly well written statement. This book was as much of a quest for me as it was for the main characters. I thought about giving it up a few times but pressed on and finished the journey with the three animal companions. Overall, I'm glad I did. Wonderful imaginative settings throughout and a good ending with some great descriptions of very tense action.

Early on, it was the wordiness that nearly did me in. Many times there are full paragraphs full of sentences which all say variations of the same thing. But again, I was happy to have stuck with it. The newer characters added to the story towards the middle and end are really exciting and intriguing.

If you dig epic fantasy journeys, themes about universal oneness and companionship, and fierce animals as main characters - definitely give "Three Feathers" a read!

This is not the type of book I normally read, but I'm so glad I did. Watching Joshua, Krieg, Wind...and of course Grey, who really was my watch them on Joshua's journey grow, bond, overcome so many obstacles and of course learn deep life lessons, it was an honor to read. I think this writer, who I will confess is a friend, has a wonderful mind for writing and with his creativity and imagination, will have many more tales to tell!

There are some books that are meant to be savored like a fine wine (or juicebox) and this is one of them, and when I finally came to the end, my heart rejoiced. Not because it was over, but because it's a story that will live on in my heart.

Joshua is on a journey of epic proportions for one such as himself. You see, he's a rooster. He has a dream about three feathers and after much debate, he can no longer deny what must be done. So, he jumps the fence, leaving the safety of his home and takes off on a quest. His decision isn't without consequences, but it also comes with many rewards.

This narrative is much like life in that we often find ourselves faced with cross-road type decisions that either lead us along an unknown path, or one that is known and thus, safe. It takes much courage to willingly go into the unknown—to follow our dreams. As we travel with Joshua on his quest to find the three feathers, we learn that yes, there are dangers, but also great rewards when we follow our dreams. The people we meet along the way may turn into the family we never knew we were missing. We may also run into those who would like to see us fail, but they only win if we lose faith in ourselves.

I'd love to tell you more, but I don't want to give too much away. I do hope you'll give this story a chance no matter what age you are. In it you will find adventure, wisdom, friendship, foes, courage, hope, encouragement, and so much more! It's a beautiful story, well told and well received.
