Editorial Reviews

Circus melodrama takes a turn for the weird when animal trainer Jonny Wilken discovers that his lady love has a secret admirer: Akbar, the tiger she raised from a cub, now the magnificent full-grown creature with whom she performs her circus act. Inflamed emotions errupt with an unspeakable rampage of bloody violence that leaves the audience horrified.

Harry Piel, a motion picture writer-producer-director in his native Germany since the silent days, also appeared in many of his own movies, so often opposite wild animals that he became German cinema's answer to Clyde Beatty. The man-woman-jungle cat triangle of The Tiger's Claw proves that love and hate are not "for humans only" and makes it one of Piel's most unusual films, told against a backdrop of death-defying circus routines. -- Tom Weaver

I feel I ought to warn all prospective buyers of this disc that it has been severely cut. What was once a wonderful circus film with a running time of 131 minutes [I have the original version on video], has been cut down to an out and out thriller of 71 [!!] minutes. There are exactly 60 minutes missing, which gives the whole movie a totally different aspect. Two of the actors mentioned in the credits never appear in the film, the beginning has been chopped off, as has the end. Oh, there's an end alright, but there is quite a bit more to come, for instance what happened to the tiger. One never gets to see the Great Dane [dog] that appears in the movie and is of some importance, and various other performers, animal as well as human. I can only image it was cut so ruthlessly to fit a double bill. Incidentally, amazon gives the running time as 90 minutes. Not true. Probably not their fault, either. I imagine that's what they were told by the distributor. Believe me, 71 min. is all there is. Alas.
This said, I must also say that in spite of the "shortcomings", the disc is still worth buying, especially at the price offered. The picture quality is VERY good [surprisingly] and there are lots of beautiful close-ups. The dubbing, on the other hand, is downright awful. In some scenes even the meaning of the dialogue has been altered, so that it gives the story a completely different twist.
All in all though, an abbreviated tiger is better than no Tiger Akbar at all! It's still a little treasure. Especially as Harry Piel movies are hard to come by. The negatives of a great many of them were destroyed by bombs during the war.
Hildegard Brosseau.
