From Booklist

Eleanor has spent half her life atoning for the accident that paralyzed her sister, Eve, when they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the sisters live together in the South Carolina Low Country with their mother and Eve’s husband. Eleanor not only does the cooking and chauffeuring, she also provides the family with a steady paycheck. When Eleanor’s boss asks her to take a side job acting as caregiver for his elderly aunt Helena, she jumps at the chance—seeing it as an opportunity to spend time away from the stifling frustration she experiences at home. Little does she realize she’s exchanging one dysfunctional family for another. Helena has lots of secrets to hide, and her troubles go all the way back to WWII. Eleanor and Helena get off to a rocky start but soon discover they have plenty in common, having both spent their lives trying to win forgiveness from their sisters. White moves smoothly between narrators as well as different time periods, crafting an intriguing and romantic family drama that will appeal to fans of Sarah Jio and Dorothea Benton Frank. --Rebecca Vnuk

This story is about complicated relationships, dysfunctional families, deep dark secrets and trying to learn to become whole again...It is romantic, emotional, and intriguing....It will intertwine past and present stories seamlessly...This story is so captivating and the plot line just flowed that I couldn't put it down until the very last page...Great character development, so much, that you feel everyone's emotions: pain, regret, loss, severe grief, jealousy and pure love spill from the pages....The beautiful detailed scenery of "Edisto Island, South Carolina" made me feel like I was right in the story, hearing the ocean, smelling the salty air, feeling the sand and seeing the bright stars on a clear night....

Ellie clinically died the first time she fell out of that tree trying to save her sister Eve when they were children..It was a tragedy all around for the entire family...Eve became a paraplegic and weds the love of her life, Glen....Ellie is alive but through guilt is emotionally dead and becomes the caretaker for her whole family after her father died...Both sisters' future dreams shattered forever....

When Eve announces that she is pregnant and is going to depend on Ellie more than ever, it opens the gates to severe jealousy, rivalry and pain all over again...I actually felt angry at one point by the way, Ellie's family was treating her....Ellie starts losing her personna completely as it's being absorbed everyday by her families wants and needs......Her only break will come when she is offered a job as a companion to her boss's Aunt Helena, who is just recovering from ill health and her own tragedy....

This was a book that is so well written and from beginning to end transports you into the environment in which the story is written. Each time I sat down to read this I found myself being drawn further and further in due to the rich description, but beyond that the drama and plot of the story itself. The author has also done a great job with her characters, developing depth in each one and allowing you as a reader to both live vicariously through her characters, but also see and feel the emotions running just below (and sometimes on top of) the surface of their reality. You will be transported into the south through the culture that is shared throughout the book itself and you will be transfixed by the story within the story that unveils itself to you with each page that you read! A very well written book that I highly recommend!

I really loved this story - so much so that I kept putting off finishing it because I didn't want to leave these characters behind. I've read most, if not all, of Karen White's books and I think this is her best by far. I'll be thinking about it for days.

I really, really, like Karen White but this book was flat and in places, rather boring. The romance was too convenient and trite though I did like the character of an elderly lady named Helena who was one of the few characters that I found to have any depth. The "heroine" was so slow witted that I felt like gob smacking her on more than one occasion. The story which was centered on art theft during the waning days of WWII had potential but again, I found it flat and predictable.

Having said all the above, the book is an ok read which is not what I've come to expect from Ms. White who really is a gifted and wonderful writer but this just isn't a book I like very much, especially considering it's from from her.

When is the next Tradd Street book coming out? The Tradd series and Falling Home, After The Rain...Ms. White doing what she does best and I hope she returns to it with her next book.

Karen White, whom I have had the priviledge of meeting, gets better with every book. I love her descriptive wording, and her characters feel so real to me. Like I know these people. Ms White is a first rate author in my opinion/

More About the Author

I grew up being a voracious reader and it was a natural step to turn my interest to writing. I have published 18 award-winning and bestselling novels including my June 2014 release, A LONG TIME GONE, which debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at number 24.

I write what others have termed "grit-lit"--southern women's fiction, as well as a contemporary paranormal mystery series set in Charleston, South Carolina. All of my books are set in the US South, and feature a female protagonist at a crossroads in her life.

I live near Atlanta, Georgia with my husband, two children, and the cutest Havanese dog, Quincy, whom readers may recognize as General Lee in the Tradd Street series.

My upcoming book, THE SOUND OF GLASS, will be released by New American Library, a division of Penguin Random House Publishing Group, on May 12, 2015. It's set in the beautiful town of Beaufort, deep in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Up next: the re-release of my first two books IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON and WHISPERS OF GOODBYE in the fall of 2015!
