From the Author
When disposing of my father's possessions after his death in 1980, I was astonished to find under his bed a small metal box containing numerous letters and other keepsakes of my great grandfather, George Varney, Brevet Brigadier General and Colonel of the 2nd Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment from Bangor. This hitherto unknown family treasure led me eventually to research the life of General Varney and his part in the Civil War. The Tin Box is the product of those pleasurable efforts. The discovery in the box of a tattered notebook containing a wealth of genealogical information allowed me to trace Varney's ancestry in America to the 1630s. I believe the book will appeal to readers of Civil War history and to anyone who might have old scraps of paper in the attic from which to fashion their own genealogical history.
