Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, December 2011: The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories packs a lot of talent into one quirky little gem of a book. The result of a collaboration between artists and writers from around the globe and edited by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, these illustrated stories--each merely a few lines long--run the gamut of funny, clever, poignant, and delightfully odd. Reading The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is like eating an unmapped box of chocolates--you don’t know what is going to come next, only that it’s bound to be good. --Seira Wilson

I stumbled across this little gem the other day while on Amazon. It was a bit of an impulse buy at first but has since turned into one of my favorite reads this month. "The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories" is a collaborative work of (very) short stories by members of the website Hitrecord ([...]) which is directed by actor and artist Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, 50/50 etc). This highly enjoyable collection of stories and illustrations range from the fanciful to the profound. One page finds a curious King Midas another the "chance" encounter between Fate and Coincidence. My particular favorite begins "just before I died my life passed before my eyes..." (pg 24) which accompanies a stunning illustration of a person in shadow surrounded by lines, the placement of which suggest the inside of an eye. Each story is left up to the interpretation of the reader which gives this collection a quasi-creative-writing-workshop feel to it, making the English major in me smile and cringe at times.

Witticisms and cutesy images of eggs and oranges aside the endearing thread that binds this collection together is the obvious love and care of the writers and artists who contributed to this work. Each page is a testament to the purity of the creative process and that is something to be celebrated. Here is a work of art by mostly anonymous (and perhaps first time) artisans in an effort to spread the idea of collaborative creation, a refreshing concept that is perhaps somewhat foreign to the current climate of me me me but which reminds us of the enduring need (as writers, readers, and everyone in between) to tell stories. Simple stories of life.

The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories (Vol. 1) by HitRecord and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was selected as an Amazon Best Book of December 2011. It's a gem of tiny (as opposed to short) stories.

The stories are so tiny that they take up a page or two at the most. While these stories are more like poems, puns, riddles, and sophisticated cartoons (think New Yorker), I found the selections brilliant. A mix of whimsy, humor, wryness, and quirky (in the best possible way), The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is the sort of book that starts conversations. For instance, I'd love to compare notes with others, see which were their favorite stories. I started out listing the ones that I wanted to share with friends: the one about the doctor's wife, the magician's rabbit, the story of the egg and the orange, the periodic table, the stuffed guests. . . But then I realized that I liked so many of them that a full list would likely bore you. Check it out yourself!

The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories Volume 1 sort of reminded me of those Nutshell Library books in I'd read when I was much younger. I'd carried my beautifully illustrated and tiny Nutshell Library books everywhere until they were so worn out. I brought them with me when we moved overseas and to every house we moved to. In the same way, I know that The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is a keeper - it's a book that I'm taking with me no matter where I move to. Sort of like my collection of Shel Silverstein books.

But I don't just like the book. HitRecord, its collaborative approach and the way that the organization shares the profits of its projects is also unusual and worth supporting.

HitRecord is an "open collaborative production company" with projects that include videos, live shows, music, and books.

"The universe is not made of atoms; it's made of [tiny] stories." -Muriel Rukeyser [& wirrow]

Actor/artist/producer Joseph Gordon-Levitt created the website hitRECord as a place where artists of every kind can come together and collaborate. A creative commons like environment, it's considered an "open-collaborative production company." Essentially, all users work together to create art, whether it's by adding images, photos, texts, footage, music, etc. One person can submit a drawing. Another dabbles with it. Another adds text. Another colors it in. Etc. All work is everyone's.

Since its inception, there have been live shows, films, CDs, shirts, documentaries and more. The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: Volume 1 is the first collaborative tiny book. The book's goal is to showcase that a big idea can come from a tiny story.

From first looking at it, the book is adorable. It is tiny, about the size of my hand, but the stories are not. They may be short in words, but not in ideas. Each tiny tale is accompanied by a drawing representing it. Each little story is a collaborative effort, as noted in the back where each contributor is listed.

I really enjoyed the book. The stories range from sweet to sad, beautiful to funny. With each being so short, it's easy to finish the book in less than an hour. But, despite it being such a short read, it's really one that sticks with you. Reminiscent of the Six-Word Memoir books, it's more touching, more charming. Perhaps it's because there's no limit on words, but still. It's amazing how a full story can be told in just a handful of words and one image. It's terrific how people can work together to produce a final concept.

The Tiny Stories project is still going on, and still encouraging people to participate. So if you're interested in lending an idea, an image, a word to a story, go for it. Perhaps you'll be featured in volume 2, a sequel I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing.
