Book Description

Technology has always been a part of human culture, but not all technologies are created equal. The digital technologies that structure so much of our lived experience have been greeted with both unbridled enthusiasm and reactionary pessimism. Neither of these postures toward digital technology, however, help us to think clearly about its consequences. The essays collected in The Tourist and the Pilgrim draw on an eclectic assortment of sources -- historical, literary, sociological, philosophical -- to understand how digital technologies effect our personal and social lives.

Michael Sacasas has been writing about technology and culture since 2010. His work has appeared in The New Inquiry, Gizmodo, and The American; and it has been cited in The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, Gawker, Hazlitt, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.

5.0 out of 5 stars History and personality - a perfect blend December 20, 2013

Having grown up in the 40's and 50's with college in the 60's with, I know this book nails the culture of the time and the devastating effect it had on susceptible people. With the confluence of the civil rights movement, the Vietnam war protests, the Cuban missile crisis, the appearance of the Beatles, the Hippie culture and the acceptance of the drug culture, life in the US was impacted in ways we hadn't anticipated - many for good and many for bad. It was interesting to "re-live" this time period and see the unfortunate destruction of a Fort Worth family (where I grew up) due, in large part, to the change in cultural norms. Fascinating reading and done with insight and skill. Great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meaning of technology explored August 28, 2013

Excellent read. Five stars. The author neither blindly embraces technology nor regards it as an evil to be fought. Each chapter examines aspects of different technologies and speculates on how incorporating these devices into our life can have both beneficial and deleterious results. Must read if you have an interest in this area. It is also so clearly written that the book can serve as an interesting introduction to the topic.
