I bought this book for my niece with the intention of just wrapping it and giving it away. Instead, I found myself reading it and then talking about it with my friends at dinner the next night. I live on the East Coast and have been up and down the eastern seaboard many times, but I didn't know anything about this part of American history. I was happy to get this information. But really, let's face it, this is a children's book. It's not supposed to appeal to me. Yet I really liked it and, I'm happy to report, so did my niece. She's 8 years old and likes to read, but she's not what I would call a heavy-duty reader. She ended up finding a quiet spot during her party and reading this book. To me, that's the sign of a great children's book. I highly recommend it.

This delightful story is based on an actual event that occurred when the British invaded the Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812. The British were headed up the bay. Maryland's boat building towns were often their targets. One clever town outsmarted the British.
The book is very appropriate in this year of the 200th anniversary of this invasion.
The book is enjoyed by children of all ages - adults too!

This is an exceptional book! It is the boy version of the book "Scarlet Stockings Spy" but with a different story. Adults and children alike will be captivated by this inspiring historical tale. Illustrated by the same artist who did the "Scarlet Stockings Spy", the pictures in this book absorb you into the time period. Based on a true story, the book reminds us of the bravery and patriotic spirit of our forefathers when America was a young nation during the Revolutionary War. It makes the Revolutionary War period come to life for children as they follow a young boy who comes up with an idea to fool the enemy and save his town! It is a tale that you won't find in many history books, and many people don't know it happened. If you want to teach your children history, this is one of the best ways to do it!
Age range of the book is 4-Adult!

My daughter, who just turned 5, loved this book and had me read it to her three times on the day she received it. She already had a basic understanding of the American Revolution and the War of 1812 and knew about the Battle of St. Michaels, so she was very excited when she received this book. It's definitely a good story set in historic context. However, it's not excellent children's literature. Its value is in bringing history to life for children. For this reason, it is important for parents/adults to discuss with children which parts of the story are history and which are fiction. The author's note at the end of the book is helpful, but should have been more informative (especially since the book is targeted for children ages 8+). I didn't like the illustrations but my daughter didn't mind them.

My husband and I are lovers of all things history, but we had honestly never heard of this story! And, we used to live in the area of the country where it took place. A delightful read!
