Editorial Reviews

Review

In this daring and poetic study, Micha Cárdenas guides us through the world of the transexual, the transgenerational, the transpolitical, the transborder.  The transreal is both a multilayered space and an existential condition. Brilliant.
Diana Taylor, University Professor, Performance Studies and Spanish, New York University

The book itself, a provocative combination of theory, art, and autobiography, is at once a field guide, operating manual, and diary that embodies the mobile, mixed realities that it activates and describes, bringing together erotics and ethics within its calls to action.
Jordan Crandall, Associate Professor, Visual Arts, UC San Diego

Micha Cárdenas and her playmates are ontological guerrillas who know that blowing up the dominant order of power/knowledge is only the first step towards real revolution. The crucial next step is materializing virtual possibilities immanent in our current situation.
Susan Stryker, Associate Professor, University of Arizona

Full disclosure: Micha Cárdenas and I became friends from my having curated her collaborative performance work (with Elle Mehrmand) in various live art exhibitions. We've also co-curated an exhibition together.

Through their performance work, Cárdenas and Mehrmand introduced me to Second Life and by extension -- and with greater interest to me than the Second Life platform itself -- critical discourse and performance practice that challenge notions of what's real (or may be real) and what constitutes reality(-ies). Further, their work offers ways of reexamining the body, how / where it exists (if at all) and its ability to trans between and through realities, "real," transreal, imagined, other. Ideally, the disclosure hopes to preclude any bias alarm triggered by my 5 star rating, but her stars are in alignment and despite the book's occasional typo here and there, each star is justified.

As part of a visionary network of scholars / thinkers / artists, many of them cited / referenced / interviewed in the book, Cárdenas has created an artful, streamlined and thought provoking mix of gender / art theory, comp sci, art practice / criticality and the profoundly, courageously personal. A true joy to read.

"To say that I am transreal is a strategy for embracing a gender that exceeds daily reality on Planet Earth and that says back to all the people who have tried to make me choose between man or woman that I choose to be a shape-shifter, a dragon and a light wave." - Micha Cárdenas
