Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The story of Charles I's trial and execution has been told many times before, but in this work the relevant historical documents (newspapers, letters, parliamentry papers) have been gathered together to present those dramatic events in narrative form. Beginning with December 1, 1648, this collection provides virtually a day-by-day account of the King's trial, execution, and funeral. The documents are organized and presented in a clear fashion with the addition of modernized spelling and punctuation, since the book is not intended to be a critical edition. It complements C. V. Wedgwood's classic A Coffin for King Charles: The Trial and Execution of Charles I ( LJ 6/15/64).

The book can get a bit tedious due to the repetitious nature of some of the documents, but overall this is a great book to use when searching for primary source material on Charles trial.

This book was a required book in a British history class I took. When I started reading it, I was skeptical. I had little background in history and was not sure how I would enjoy reading primary sources. To my surprise, I enjoyed it. The style was a little bit difficult for me just because I am not used to reading in this time period, but once I got into it it because easier. I enjoyed reading about the history and the different arguments of those participating in the trial.

Before I read this book, I was skeptical about reading any primary sources. After I read this book, I have read many other documents about primary sources and this one is well done compared to some of the others. If you have any interest in British history, revolutions, historical trials, or Charles I, I would heartily recommend this book.
