Or maybe it's like swiping his private journal from him at a coffee shop...either way, it's a thumbs up, by golly.

This is the best work on creativity I've ever come across. It's both light-hearted and profound, which takes real skill (or blind luck) to balance. The artwork is fascinating, and the inspiring exercises I've tried so far provide just the right amount of challenge and encouragement along with spring boards to toss you about and rivulets to carry you sideways. A delightful ride! (But then where will you go? That is the question.) This is just a wonderful book!

I've always been inspired by Nick Bantock's work--which has actually been life changing for me--and so I was very excited to learn of this book. I find his artistry, amazing and his ideas, fascinating. I love his brain! His spirit and insights too. In his work, I find wisdom along with playfulness and wry humor, beauty aside the grotesque and grisly, the monumental and the beauty of quiet and considered ordinariness, the sensual and the coldly cosmic. I'm not really trying to get down a set of oppositions here--or even be complete--but my point is that, for me, his art and his writings--beautiful and/or compelling, etc.--often expose, in an interesting or affecting way, how things really aren't just "this or that," but both, individual and neither all at the same time--complex and not. Or often his work reveals something unexpected and that something is "something other"--or could be. And on... Who could be a better guide into creativity and inspiration? And so when this book came out, I pounced.

And I love the "participation" of the Trickster. I love this so much! Who else could be so perfectly suited as a "helpmate" (and mischief-maker) for these adventures as the Trickster is the boundary crosser, the one who mixes up all the lines and more?

This is THE BOOK if you want to find out how to become an artist. Whether in writing, painting drawing ... what ever you love to create! Every single step is helpful. The book is written in Nick Bantock`s wonderful way of expressing himself. Funny and witty but still serious. Accompanied by Nick`s most wonderful collages and paintings - A MUST!

An interesting journey through 49 exercises that are directed at exploring and perhaps uncovering the creativity within us. For those who have read Bantock's Griffin & Sabine series, you'll recognize some of the wonderful artwork interspersed throughout this book.

Some of the exercises in the beginning are great for relaxing my mind before I resumed focus on the work at hand.

Some of the other exercises explored my creativity in writing limericks, getting started with casual writing, creating collages and drawing. No special art equipment is called for, but regular materials we generally have around us, such as pens, paper, magazines, gluesticks and paint are used.

And the best thing about this book .... the exercises are fun! I've definitely discovered some creativity outlets I look forward to exploring in greater detail.

My first step into serious Mail Art (making amazing things to send out into the world to others – in my case, there was an amazing exchange I did with another mail artist that included having a de-stuffed stuffed animal mailed without a box, and a plastic coconut filled with confetti… my mailman adored me, he did) were Nick Bantock’s amazing ‘Griffin & Sabine’ series. It was a haunting love story done via letters, cards and all sorts of mailed items that were actually part of the story themselves. Not just an amazing read, the ability to open envelopes and pull out letters that were part of the text added an extra dimension to the enjoyment of the books.

‘The Trickster’s Hat’ is not fiction, but a wonderful collection of exercises and ideas to get your creativity to the next level. Some of the exercises are simple and can be done with a pencil and a pad—some require trips out of the house and a lot of gathering and construction. All of them, even if you just read and dream how you WOULD do them will make you pause and look at your world a bit differently, and that is the important thing. Learn to see the world in another way, learn to try something you think you cannot do, learn to leap rather than sit back and you change a bit for the better. The book is great; you are greater still and together, you and this book will do some wonderful things.
