this is a must have for any lover of jazz standards. so much of NKC's work is schmaltzy and main stream, this is the real deal. Nat has an incredible gift in interpretation, vocal talent, and the keyboard work is especially tasty. some of the tunes are slow balads, and there is a match in fast tempo swing numbers as well. If you enjoy playing jazz you'll be out looking for the charts for many of these numbers. includes 'only a paper moon', 'don't blame me'; 'sweet loraine'; besame mucho; i can't give you anything but love; boogie a la king; i'min the mood for love; too marvelous for words; laura; blues & swing; this will make you laugh; ain't misbehavin; rosetta; honeysuckle rose; tea for two; pitchin up a boogie; GREAT piano work, fine vocals, inspirational guitar from the 40's. (war time release)

This five disc set is more than just Trio recordings. In fact on some the 'trio' is backed by larger ensembles, or they are backing a vocalist (or are actually a quartet). As long as you know up front what this set contains you will not be disappointed.

I will admit that some of the tracks and overall mastering leaves something to be desired. Some tracks are so perfect that you marvel at the clarity of seventy year old recordings. Others are not so spectacular. For die hard fans this is the price we pay to hear some of this early stuff, especially since a good amount was never released on record. This is because much of this material was recorded on V-Discs intended for armed forces radio broadcasts for troops during World War II or for commercial radio broadcasts. Moreover, a lot - but not all - of the tracks are from the 1944-45 period, making this an excellent companion set to a collection titled Transcriptions that features the Trio from 1946 to 1950.

Since Roy F. Johnson's very helpful March 23, 2011 review provides a complete track list, I'll cover the highlights of each disc in this set:

DISC ONE: covers 1944-45 with the classic trio (Nat King Cole backed by Johnny Miller on bass and Oscar Moore on guitar) and clocks in at 36:51.
DISC TWO: All of the tracks are from 1945 and clocks in at 42:22.
DISC THREE: Nat King Cole backed by Johnny Miller on bass and Oscar Moore on guitar, and clocks in at 46:32.
DISC FOUR: A treasure for me because I am also a fan of Anita O'Day and the last five tracks feature the Trio backing her vocals. Clocks in at 35:12.

Such a pleasure to listen to, whether for atmosphere or for appreciating the outstanding skill of Nat's playing. I now know what was missing from my music collection.
