I am a big fan of surrealism, absurdism and drama. The enigmatic protagonist in this book who may or may not have done something shady to end up where he is, and it just can't be figured out by you, is sexy, sad and confused. He is sentimental for people he's never met, a shepherd to animals he's never seen the likes of and yet is the only point of contact between them and a seemingly conscious ship of insanely huge proportions. the writing is stellar, the adventure is addictive and the emotive writing is just gorgeous,
Take it all in and then notice the tension in your body at the last few pages of this first installment. I am absolutely giddy for the second installment of "the Tropic of Never".
I cannot reccommend this book enough

This is one of those books I made the mistake of starting right before bed, with the result being a severe lack of sleep. I couldn't put the book down until I was finished with it.

The best thing about the book, to me, was the way it captured the isolation, sense of wonder, and sheer practicality (and even occasional boredom) of finding yourself alone in an alien environment and trying to make sense of your situation. In some ways, it reminded me of a more literate version of Myst. Bits of information about the world in which the main character finds himself are revealed at a slow burn, always keeping the reader intrigued.

Given that much of the book is spent with one character, it is to the author's credit that that character is realistic and likable, but not without his flaws. With Edgar Locke as my guide, it was not hard to transport myself into the lonely world of the Coelsige.

I highly recommend this book, and anticipate more sleepless nights when Parts 2 & 3 arrive.

Just finished this part 1 and I'm left breathless and eagerly awaiting Parts 2 and 3. The story and voice pay strong homage to Stephen King... So if you're a fan of his, this is right up your alley. It also reminded me of "Pillars of the Earth" but if Neil Gaiman had written it instead of Ken Follett. Really solid first effort. It was a fun, quick read and I can't wait to read on!
